Why has there not been a sequel? Or at least a game in the same vein?
Because sadly Digital Anvil is no more.
They’ve tried to make games like Freelancer, but none have really succeeded, sadly. This is one of the reasons most of the space sims are coming out of eastern Europe these days. ;) Very few folks over here are making 'em anymore.
Diablo 3 comes out next year, probably. I thought the two series were pretty similar.
Rock8man is correct. Freelancer was essentially Diablo in space. Instead of mana, you had shield batteries. Instead of health potions, you had nanobots to fix the hull. Instead of armor, you had a ship, and so on.
I absolutely agree on the Freelancer/Diablo comparison. That’s the one thing I thought that would make Freelancer better – better loot. Mid-game, a lot of times the random fights with space pirates weren’t worth the trouble, but if you added some random loot drops, with a chance for rare weapons or minerals, that would have been awesome.
Yeah, loot aspect got a bit silly in the mid-late game, with mostly junk coming out of very advanced fighters.
Gah! Everytime someone mentions how Freespace 2 is awesome it makes me sad, because I desperately want to play a cool space sim but god knows why I couldn’t get into FS2. I did install the mods. I really hope I was doing something wrong and that I’ll “get” the game next time I try it.
Ugh, sorry to hear that belgerog, since it’s basically the best at what it does. Did you play the X-Wing/Tie Fighter or Wing Commander games at all?
How is the 360 controller support with any of the Freespace 2 mods? Does it exist at all?

Seriously, I’ve only ever played FS2 with a joystick, so I can’t tell ya…
No, I had played a bit of X vs Tie a long time ago, but I definitely want to try those too. I’m very much a newbie in space sims, but I find them very appealing. I was young and ignorant when X-Wing/Tie and even Freespace 2 came out.
I did try FS2 with a joystick, although it did strange things (force feedback stopped working suddenly after I shot).
Well gamepads have come a long way, and I’m not sure I can even find my old PC joystick and the gamepad seems like a better option than a mouse.
Where the fuck is space rogue or something like it? I want elite + gta + red faction guerrilla + demons souls.
I’d give Freespace another go then, as well as Tie Fighter (the pinnacle of the X-Wing/Tie Fighter series, IMO). Freespace 2 is my favorite game and space sim of all time, but Tie Fighter is a very, very, very close second.
Doesn’t make it any less wrong. Get a cheap joystick for chrissake.
