I had an opportunity to see a test screening for this a few months ago, but I got stuck in the dreaded single sausage line and they ran out of room. They said they were going to still pay those of us who didn’t get in the $20 they promised, but I never got it.
Hoping that this brings more awareness of the Napoleonic period to people, especially Americans. When I was in school, I swear it was only mentioned in like two sentences in our history books. It wasn’t until I was an adult that I actually learned about it.
I don’t know if this is a hot take or not, but I think the Napoleonic wars had a bigger influence on modern Europe than WWI or WWII.
Spielberg said earlier this year that he was close to getting the greenlight on his HBO adaptation of Kubrick’s failed Napoleon movie. I’m wondering if HBO is in a holding pattern until they see how Ridley fares?
If so, it would be ironic because Kubrick’s Napoleon was killed off in pre-production because expensive historical epics were bombing at the time. Kubrick ended up retooling some of the project into Barry Lyndon, instead.
Phoenix is 48. Napoleon was 46 at the Battle of Waterloo. So, yeah, he looks too old for Napoleon’s early career, but no aging makeup needed for the end.
