There are a number of schools that have managed to maintain both academic and athletic excellence, given a few ups and downs. Texas and Michigan both come to mind.

Okay, the guy is a nut.
Doesn’t change the fired coach being a failure though. I also imagine the AD who was fired has been fighting this fight for some time.
Academics can work in small or individual sports, but in football and basketball it is really hard. Baseball is mixed, Stanford has done well.
Some schools maybe can do both, though engineering schools are I think a different sort of breed maybe. I dunno. It just seems like it’s an either or situation for most places.

As a season ticket holder who paid full price plus the ‘donation’, I’m ok with this (though I wouldn’t mind a little something, you know. for the effort… - Carl Spackler)…
In New York Giants’ tradition of season-ticket holder fan appreciation, congratulations, you get a free medium Pepsi.

The first three quarters they looked as good as any Bruins team in recent memory. The fourth quarter they looked like the last couple teams. The Line play on both sides of the ball looked really good with DTR and Charbonett (sp) playing well.
The next two games will tell.
Illini about to beat Wisconsin and be 4-1. Pretty cool, imo.
Yup, but the fourth quarter was also basically run out the clock time and the 4 minute offense had problems. I’m also not sold on Utah defense yet.
Oregon St could be in this game if they didn’t turn it over. Moved the ball well otherwise… should be a good one next weekend!

Well Michigan answered some questions today. 1st quality opponent on the road and they control the game from their first possession until the end. They were able to score 27 on Iowa’s nation leading defense and their defense was on lockdown all day. They had 4 sacks and only gave up 35
yds rushing. They still have some tough games ahead with Penn St, OSU and surprisingly Illinois at 4-1 and even though Mich. State is down this season, they always seem to get up for U of M, so time will tell but for now, they look like they are for real.

I just read this and all I can say is damn! That’s cold.
DISH, due to a contract dispute with Disney, stopped broadcasting any Disney affiliated channel at 3 AM this morning. That meant that they just blocked their viewers for every single ESPN channel there is. On a football Saturday in October. Whoever thought that this was going to get them sympathy from their customers, underestimated who the viewers are likely to blame for this. DISH is getting torched for it.
They shouldn’t be.
Ever since the new CEO took over, Disney had been doing everything they can to bleed every possible dollar they can out of the public. They want to force Dish to charge customers for local channels even if they haven’t signed up for them. They want to force EVERYONE to pay for ESPN and ESPN2, even if they have a package w/o sports channels. I’m usually pissed at Dish when they do this, but this is just a blatant cash grab by Disney. Fuck them and fuck them hard.

That may all be true but DISH’s problem is the average person, who will not look past the fact that they have a contract with DISH and DISH is not meeting the terms of that contract. I think they underestimated the people’s inability to think beyond one degree of separation when they did this. Plus they did it with no warning. It would have been better for them to do this at the beginning of the week, giving people some adjustment time. Instead they chose to drop a maximum impact stealth bomb.

With the first half’s almost over Clemson and Georgia are losing.
Clemson up a TD now, but Georgia is down 10 with the 4th about to begin.
I must say, now that I’m awake and the hangover has receded, that the Nebraska - Indiana game was a fun one to watch. The post-coaching-change Huskers look like a respectable football team, one that is actually motivated to play hard and win games. Beating Indiana by two touchdowns isn’t exactly a statement that Nebraska is back to being a good team but it’s a world of improvement over the dysfunctional mess that was on the field for Frost’s last few games.
0-5 Colorado fired Karl Dorrell.
