OK. A person hold the idea of nationality, because they were told what their nationality was. It was prescribed. Citizens subscribe to that identity.
In fact, let’s use Nazi Germany as an example. German people believed that they were Nazis, because their Nazi leaders told them that they were. Young people believed the stuff, because they were told it. They were prescribed an identity.
Interrogators & intimidaters can also force a person to confess to things that that person might not have done - it is a well known phenomenon.
So, if you accuse someone of something, then social peer pressure might make a person believe that the accuser was correct in their accusation and assumption.
Hence, if a person lacking a feeling of identity, and is told that they are something, then the accuser has prescribed a convenient identity for that person, which that person might actually adopt - to fill the void, especially if there is a degree of interrogation or intimidation involved.
However, I don’t need to explain Sean Hannity, because it has nothing to do with the original point.

In the rush to get balance, somehow we wound up with giving a pedestal and a mic to anyone who says anything that might not be a majority viewpoint. It feeds a false idea that there are all these singular viewpoints to begin with, but i am happy to say this site does not support Nazis as a whole… which is a good thing actually. It’s not a leftist or Democratic view, it’s a humane one.
Err. No. Equivalency is not the same as coming up with a strategy to deal with an issue, or recognising tactics, nor should it be seen as such. What makes you think otherwise?

Yea it is. Remember when some of the people locked up in Guantanomo Bay, who hadn’t done anything, ended up becoming terrorists?
It didn’t mean that all those people were terrorists - some arrested just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time - but they did grow to resent their treatment so much that, ironically, Guantanomo became a haven for terrorist recruitment.
Also, just the fact that the US led coalition in Iraq, in not being prepared for liason with the native people, ended up causing a wave of Insurgency that DIDN’T EXIST under Saddam Hussein - his troops’ morale was broken very quickly.
To a lesser extent, how do you think gangs work? Similar principle.

Rhetoric is very important - I’m being mostly direct so you can see what it is like, and hopefully adapt your rhetoric IF you ever had to deal with, say, a troubled youth or person who was teetering on joining the alt right. You might think it is a joke now, but I can only hope that you don’t ever have to deal with troubled youths & Right-wing extremism within your family, friends, loved, ones, neighbours etc.
And telling racists and misogynists that they’re being racists and misogynists – and heaven forfend, if you’re a person of color or identify as a gender other than male, sticking up for yourself – makes you no better than a rendition torturer.
