Yeah, some details would have been nice, but it sounds like it was a combination of being removed from her previous circles + some friends “deprogramming” her.
All of that, and her life crashing out on her. The piece makes it pretty clear: when you’ve shilled for the alt-right as a writer and commentator you are basically un-hireable in any other writing ecosphere, and honestly in most job markets as well.
It also seems like she’s pretty fearful for her own safety. The piece very carefully avoids providing details on where she lives, works, etc…all of which probably makes a full conversion a little difficult to detail.
EDIT: there’s also got to be some sort of health concern that may have turned her life. She appears to be suffering not only from diabetes, but also perhaps some sort of stress-induced alopecia: she’s wearing a wig in the photos, and her eyebrows are obviously pasted on.
the question here is to me- does she deserve mercy, or should she be shunned forever?
At what level are you high enough that you don’t deserve a chance to rehabilitate yourself?

It’s good for that acknowledgement to exist, as it can help deter bigots from being open with their bigotry. However, it’s not the same as actually being a good person.
Yeah, the complete lack of Health Care in any of her jobs working for the right was a very stark fact throughout.

WRT Katie McHugh, I was curious so I did a quick image search and there are pictures from when she joined Breitbart in 2014 where her hair is clearly thinning on top and her eyebrows are almost gone. And I just noticed in that BuzzFeed article that her eyelashes are also gone.
So yeah, alopecia, but going back years, even when she was riding high on the movement.
