I’ve always loved that the ritual requires Belloq to dress in an ephod, turban, robe, the tunic with the glass bits, and a pectoral. He’s in full old Hebrew regalia!

Certainly this child needs correction, and maybe his actions are indicative of a household that encourages that kind of thing, but I suspect not, and there’s not enough information provided in the article to form a comprehensive judgement of him, the school, or his parents.

If you let your child dress up at Hitler, you’re almost certainly a terrible person.

The only thing that distinguishes what he’s wearing from Sunday dress is the red armband, which is made of a piece of torn cloth with a swastika drawn in sharpie on it. Trust me, kids are definitely creative enough to make something like that themselves. Maybe the parents helped out, but we don’t know.

This may be the case, I didn’t see the actual costume. I figured it was pretty identifiable as Hitler.

We have this weird thing in our school’s where they seem to have no problem policing natural hair and girls from showing skin but as soon as they go beyond that they get hit with free speech lawsuits.

I don’t see how any adult could let that child walk around doing that and then not respond to it, but I am not clear on what kind of responses they are allowed to do anymore. When I was in school, girls went to the principal office for wearing a t-shirt that said unbutton my fly… which was actually marketing for, was it Levi then? But again, policing girls has always been a favorite.

I dunno, but I guarantee that if some kid started walking around dressed as Hitler when I was a kid, he would have gotten thrown in the principal’s office instantly.

Although, back in the 80’s and 90’s, seemingly everyone agreed that the Nazis were in fact the bad guys whose only purpose was to be punched by Indiana Jones, or run off the road by the Blues Bros., so maybe times are different now.

They definitely can. Kids have few rights at school, specifically so that discipline can be maintained. You know like if some little shit was running around dressed as Hitler and disrupting things. Or bullying other kids. Or just being disruptive in general.

They can have their shit searched without a warrant, their speech curtailed, etc, etc.

There are limits, but if the school can claim something “materially and substantially interferes” with school operations, they can stop it. Pretty sure dressing as Hitler and throwing Seig Heils around easily qualifies.

Yeah if they weren’t allowed to stop hate speech directed at others I don’t think they could really teach anybody anything.

It’s the disruption part that’s vague and helps, but we have… court cases on this stuff:

Sure, but dressing as a Nazi and theowing Seig Heils is easily within their purview. Just as running down the halls screaming obscenities would be. Or yelling ethnic slurs.

This is kind of a weird line to be taking since it’s obvious that school admins could have done something. This is why the principal and others were suspended. If the school district was concerned about the 1st amendment they wouldn’t have basically admitted that they screwed up.
