Yeah it’s state, so government but… if they go back and found out he has been discriminating, that’s not free speech, that’s illegal and they can fire him for it. it could be they’re already looking into it but… they need to react to what they found right away, and this is what they came up with in the meantime.

Very much this. They’re cowards masquerading as heroes.

Believing it and proving it are two very different things.

Pretty how I see it. They are mitigating the damage he can do, and probably investigating what they can.

And I am sure he is feeling a lot of pressure to step down from within and without of the university.

Which is exactly the sort of attention a person like this revels in.

Maybe it, but being the good guys means playing by the rules. Which sucks, but it beats the alternative.

On the other hand, the guy needs only to have slipped up once to get his ass handed to him. Everyone slips up, and no one looks good under a microscope

I just read that there are flyers being passed out for what he can be fired for. If that is true, it looks like they really are trying to get rid of him, but their hands are tied.

All they need is a couple of students to come forward. They’ll have proof then.

FWIW, it’s not rare at all - pretty much the entire bill of rights is incorporated to apply to state and local government as well (where applicable).

Remember, if IU could fire Rasmusen for his posts outside of work, other public universities could be pressured into firing some of the very people in this forum for the things they have posted here. Given the direction the country is in danger of heading, that is a lot less remote than we once thought.

Yes because telling people to fuck off over a digital store is totally the same thing as running around telling people women and minorities don’t belong in academia while… teaching in academia.

I’m not talking about posts about a digital store.

No but you are divorcing the fact that is a teacher who has disdain for teaching large portions of the population.

Hey, maybe the next time you go into surgery, we can find an anesthesiologist who has decided you don’t deserve anything to help with pain. I’m sure you’ll line up to be served by that person because, you know, free speech.

I am, yes. And therein is the distinction between supporting the First Amendment when it is speech you agree with vs speech you disagree with. It might be unpleasant (in the extreme), but it is necessary.

Now - if he actually lets his views affect how he treats students - that is another matter entirely. Fire his ass.

Well why don’t we list all the things you care about, and then find someone who has decided you don’t deserve it and then make sure they’re apart of the process that determines if you achieve it.

Want a mortgage. Let’s find someone who says you deserve to live in the street and then give them discretion in whether or not you get that mortgage.

Want a car, too bad, the financing person thinks you should have to walk everywhere, cars or only for humans which you are not.

Want pain med, nope, not worthy.

Want an education, you should never been in the school system so if somehow you get through admissions let’s flunk yah because well lots of freshmen flunk anyway so what’s one more.

Got a child in school, well hey they’re at the back of the class, never get called on and not an ounce of praise but don’t worry, the teacher actually wrote in social media how they intend to destroy children like yours for as long as possible to make sure they feel like less than nothing at the ripe age of five.

See, the group that supports hate speech and harassment like it’ just another an ordinary thing… seem to be the people who don’t ever see this as being an every day occurrence for them, doesn’t occur to them that every single stepping stone they have ever encountered will be pulled out from under them, hindered or damaged their entire lives because well hey what does it matter if my child is taught by someone who wants them dead, no damage done there.

Here in PA, a president of a small community college was fired because he made disparaging remarks about Sarah Sanders.

That’s pretty chilling. IU got lucky the provost actual cares about the kids and about learning, because the Trustees at Highlands Community College obviously don’t care.

I hate that the guy still works there, but I am glad that state and federal employees have the right to freedom of expression, even if the rest of us don’t.

Right because making a rude remark about a specific person is totally on par with deciding women don’t deserve to be in college, while actually teaching women in college.

No they arent. Rude remarks are much lower, lesser bar, but the guy got fired for it because it was a private college. The women that shows the middle finger at Trump got fired as well.

These are the protections that the privatr sector doesn’t have and it comes at the price of good people being fired for having opinions.

This rule protects this asshate from being fired for being racist, but it also protects a lot of public employees for speaking out against the president or the Administration, because as we have seem time and again, the Administration and GOP will go after anyone they can that speaks ill.

So, I hate that he can’t be fired for his beliefs, but I hate even more that the rest of can.

Autocorrect or intended, I like it.
