Ironically, Crackle is Sony Pictures’ streaming site. Their movies, plus some original stuff.

@Jag: Time Bandits, Dark Crystal, and Labyrinth are all on instant view. Kind of a mixed bag and maybe the puppet stuff will turn them off, but if they don’t like Time Bandits tell them I’ll meet them with pistols at dawn, etc.

Nooooo! Not the Ponies!

Watched two very interesting Thai martial arts movies starring JeeJa Yanin.

In Chocolate, she’s a teenage autistic child who learns martial arts by watching others. She was 24 when filming but they got her to look 15. Her portrayal of autism was very convincing (with the caveat that I don’t have much direct experience with the autistic). The fight scenes were great including one in which her style was a clear homage to Bruce Lee. I’ve heard she trained 4 years to prepare for this role.

She’s an aimless young adult in Raging Phoenix whose life gets purpose after narrowly escaping human traffickers. The plot requires lots of suspension of disbelief but the show was worthwhile and surprisingly touching. Lots of great fight scenes, they were better than Chocolate.

After seeing these I’m ecstatic to learn JeeJa Yin will appear in The Protector 2 with Tony Jaa.

When I was that age, I liked watching MacGyver, but that may be a bit anachronistic nowadays.

Seconding Time Bandits. My son, when he was younger, loved that movie. Especially the part where (spoilers!) the boat was the giant’s hat.

I watched Time Bandits a few weeks ago with my 11 year old daughter. It hasn’t held up too well. But hey, Sean Connery is the king and Bilbo is Napoleon.

Netflix / Instantwatcher question…

I recently upgraded Netflix to include DVD/BluRay option. Now when I add a movie to my queue from Instantwatcher I get this: If the movie/show appears on Netflix as BOTH a streaming option and a disc option it adds it to NEITHER queue. When I go Netflix and search again and add it to my queue it invariably adds it only to my disc queue.

Haven’t gone in depth yet but I should have the option to add to either the instant queue or the disc-in-the-mail queue shouldn’t I?

I’ll have to give Time Bandits a shot. Confused me as a kid, but still loved it.

I ended up taping Men in Black off HBO and it was a huge hit.

Plus, it has a fantastic ending for kids!

Toasters and burnt toast scared the crap out of me for years.

Luther season 2 didn’t disappoint. Still a few of those “too clever” or “rely on the evil lunatic” moments, but overall excellent. I especially liked that we spent a lot more time developing Luther’s character, defining who he was and how he wanted to live his life, rather than just watching him react to things.

Mum! Dad! Don’t touch it! It’s eeeeeeeeeeevil!

Yessssssssss

Amazon Prime instant video is now available on the PS3. I have prime, but the selection hasn’t been great. Not sure if it’s worth making a new thread for suggestions on it.

I presume that includes streaming of subscribed series. Amazon is how I get my Mad Men fix these days.

Long overdue. Amazon’s service was never going to be a serious competitor to Netflix without the same level of device support.

I guess it’s hard for me to be objective about Time Bandits, but the idea of it ‘holding up’ is just a non-sequitur to me. I feel like today’s generation should be so lucky as to ‘hold up’ to Ralph Richardson’s Supreme Being, David Warner’s Evil, and David Rappaport’s Randall. Some of the bits (Ian Holm’s Napoleon sequence, and the stuff with Michael Palin) are too broad and haven’t aged too well. But when it’s good, IMO, it’s brilliant.

“They’ll think I’ve lost control again and put it all down to Evolution.”

“If I was the Supreme Being I wouldn’t mess about with butterflies and daffodils. I’d have started with lasers! 8 o’clock! Day One!”

Are there kids’ movies with better dialogue? Maybe Pixar at their very best. Maybe.

Started watching a “horror movie” called “Philosophy of a Knife” last night. It said it was a true retelling of a Japanese bio-weapons unit in WWII. I’d advise staying clear. It moves with glacial slowness, spending very long periods of time with discordant music showing exciting things like a closet rack with a number of white lab coats on hangars for minutes at a time. There does seem to be a lot of gore for those of you who might like that, but it is all in black and white, and the effects aren’t all that convincing. Also, the history portions, which mostly take the form of interviews with an old Russian doctor, are short and widely-spaced. Basically very little information, followed by lots of bad music and repeated showing of the same boring shot, followed by a couple minutes of nastiness, then starts over.

This could have probably been a decent half-hour documentary instead of trying to be some sort of art-house slasher flick.

I finally began Tucker and Dale vs Evil. I am watching it on my lunch breaks on my Fire so it takes a bit to finish. If you are a fan of horror/campy, this is great. It has been on my list forever and comes with great recommendations. Once I started, well it really is funny and a great watch.
