They added the whole run of Alias recently. I’ve been hoping for that for a while.

Indie Game: The Movie showed up today.

Equilibrium as well, which I’m told I need to watch.

Walking Dead Season 2 is up.

Freaks and Geeks is on Instant as is Undeclared. If you haven’t seen Freaks and Geeks yet, what are you waiting for?

Oh, cool. Now I don’t have to dig my discs out every time I want to re-watch that.

I have always wanted to watch Freaks and Geeks. Guess I have no excuse not to now.

Saw a movie on streaming called “Colin.” It’s the story of a man bitten by a zombie, who then becomes a zombie himself. We follow Colin as he wanders his way through his new existence, slowly (painfully, boringly) becoming aware that his wanderings and behavior aren’t as random as they first seem.

I thought the premise behind Colin was interesting, but wasn’t so fond of the execution. The movie runs an hour and a half-ish. Every ten minutes or so something interesting happens for a couple minutes, then we’re back to watching Colin be about as interesting as you’d imagine a zombie to be.

There is a sub-plot in the movie about people trying to “redeem” Colin. I think if the focus had not been to the point where every shot included Colin this would have been a more interesting movie. A few reminders of the ennui of zombiehood would have been enough. A whole movie of it had me fast-forwarding and probably missing key points along the way.

Loved Undeclared at the time, not sure if it will hold up. Just saw Jenna Fischer in the pilot with a brief cameo.

edit: After a few episodes I can say that Undeclared didn’t really hold up for me. Maybe I’ll have to do a comparison when Class of 96 makes it’s way to a streaming service.

Colin’s a victim of its own indieness, but it’s also a bit of a cult classic. I agree with you, Joe, and I mostly didn’t care for it. But I will say that I really liked the payoff. It’s ultimately worth sticking with it.

Headhunters. I’ve heard nothing but good things about this one. I’m hoping to watch it this weekend.

Headhunters is awesome! Go Norway!

I was just telling Razgon (a non pastry Danish) on another site that his region (Norway, Finland, Denmark, etc.) is knocking it out of the park in terms of great films the last decade or so. From The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo to Let the Right One In and Rare Exports, they’ve given us some quality films. Plus…they gave us Refn. My pick for one of the best new directors around.

He did Pusher 15 years ago. I’m not sure I’d call Refn a new director. :) Also, the tradition of great Scandinavian filmmakers goes way back to a fellow named Bergman.

But if you break it down by country, which you probably should, I don’t think Norway has been that prolific. They have, however, had some great genre movies recently, such as Headhunters and Troll Hunter. A lot of people liked Dead Snow and Cold Prey as well.

-Tom

True, true. Refn really seemed to take off in English speaking countries after Bronson, though (and rightfully so…what an amazing film). I had to go looking for his stuff after being knocked off my feet by that film.

By the way, since you were mentioning genre films and we’re discussing Scandinavian cinema for a few minutes here, try to find a copy of Frostbitten. It’s well worth the effort.

Oddly enough, Refn did an English language movie with John Turturro ten years ago called Fear X that I saw at Sundance. His direction made quite an impression on me. But you’re right that he didn’t really take off in the US until recently. After Fear X, he had to make two more Pusher movies in Denmark.

I trust you’ve seen all three Pushers? For some inexplicable reason, there’s now a remake of Pusher from another director, set in London instead of Copenhagen. Ugh.

-Tom

EDIT: Ooh, the Pusher remake is on video on demand! Here’s a link to support Qt3 if you watch it. Who’s going to take the bullet?

I was looking at the imdb page for that earlier (and saw the Fear X entry, which I wasn’t aware of…I’ll need to find that one now). The only saving grace I can find is that Zlatko Buric is playing his character Milo from the original trilogy. I find him to be a weird combination of hilarious and terrifying. I actually liked Pusher 3 more than I should have because of that.

I have a long standing rule: never spend over 4 dollars on a VOD rental UNLESS you get some Steven Seagal…and I’m talking fat Steven. I don’t pay over 2 dollars for 80’s Steven.

Refn also executive produced the remake, apparently. So he must have been okay with it on some level. If only the cash influx. I suppose I may have to investigate it one of these days. It’ll be weird to see all the characters played by different actors and then Milo.

The League Season 3 is now available.

Halleleujah!
