Yeah, earlier in the movie, right before the bust, he said that and she explained it away as adrenaline. Later in the film, he had quite a bit more faith in her, I believe. Loved her arc.

Right? Kills me EVERY time.

Ooh! I like the way you think JoshV. That’s a great idea.

“Defense noted.”

Rock8man, what no one is telling you here is that while it’s a remake of Judge Dredd, it’s really a remake of the Asian film The Raid. The whole thing takes place in one building, pretty much. Both are excellent, if you haven’t seen either. I liked The Raid a bit better because of the martial arts angle but Dredd is great.

I think they were both riffing on Die Hard, and this IMDB FAQ(for whatever that’s worth) seems to agree.

I watched the recent Dredd remake yesterday because of this thread. So grizzly! Like a samurai flick.

That’s actually an apt comparison in my opinion. It does have the feel of a 70’s samurai film. I recently picked up the Lone Wolf and Cub box set and it has kind of the same feel.

Tuned in Dredd last night without expecting much. I was very pleasantly surprised. Urban did a good job, the guy who played Avon Barksdale in the wire was a good character, too. the movie had a good flow, the effects were good but generally not overpowering, and the story was good.

Thanks for the recommendation, all!

What are some 70s Samurai films that would remind me of this? Because I’d watch that .

So happy to hear all the Dredd love. :)

I would say Yojimbo*, but that’s from the 60s, so I guess it doesn’t count.

  • Note that’s one word. It’s not Yo, Jimbo.

Which is the often forgotten battlecry for the team of real southern heroes, G.I. Jimbo.

Click it. You know you want to.

I did, and I want to again. Oh yeah…

Been watching Derek and finding I want to keep watching it. It comes perilously close to the dreary sentimentality of Cemetery Junction but always dodges away just in time; just as Gervais in his portrayal of the titular character stops just short of going “full retard.” As with the office, it’s the people around Gervais that you really come to know and love. The female lead played by Kerry Godliman is practically a redo of Dawn Tinsley only aged another ten years–which is not at all a bad thing to my mind. Everything I read about the show before watching it got my alarm bells ringing, but after some pilot episode jitters, the show really finds its voice.

Some others that popped up recently: The last season of “Fringe,” and the second season of “Once Upon a Time.” My wife really likes Once upon a Time. I find it pretty passable, but sometimes they come up with good stuff, like the Mr. Gold story development.

Netflix has pulled Cosmos. Watched a few eps with my daughter a few weeks ago. Went to watch some more last night, and nope. Gone. It’s now disc only.

WTF. Found it on Hulu.

I’ve seen Netflix do that when things are being re-released or upgraded to Blu-Ray.

They get the James Bond movies very briefly sometimes. They always yank them before I can watch them. So a couple of weeks ago when the Bond movies all suddenly showed up in my queue (but all marked to expire in two days from then), I made sure to watch From Russia With Love, which was the only Bond movie I still hadn’t seen from beginning to end.

I have to say, I loved it. But I’m really surprised that a lot of the parody in the first Austin Powers movie was a direct parody of this movie. I had no idea.

Anytime Netflix pulls something it’s usually an expiring contract. It might come back. It might not. But that’s the exciting future of digital media. :P
