For future reference, the vast majority of things that are made in Asia and feature the word “schoolgirl” in the title are going to be softcore porn. Just sayin’.

Plenty on that list of outgoing and incoming movies have rotated in and out of Netflix’s lineup several times. I mean, I probably should’ve gotten around to watching Chinatown, but oh well.

They’re adding City of God. Holy shit, watch that movie.

Oh yeah. That’s an amazing movie.

They also added Banshee Chapter, one of Tom’s recent best things you’ll see all week.

Thanks, another one from my “wanna see” list that I wasn’t aware was available!

I watched Brad Pitt in World War Z earlier this week. There were some engaging action scenes, especially the opening twenty minutes or so. Since I’m like the only one on the planet who didn’t read the book, I didn’t have big expectations and enjoyed 90% of it a lot. Somehow the last few minutes of voiceover narration didn’t work for me. I think it would have been a better movie without it.

A while back there was talk of a much, much bleaker original ending to the movie that I thought was actually rather daring for a Hollywood film. I wish they’d gone with that one.

count me in as part of the 10% who didn’t read the book before seeing this, although it sounds like you enjoyed it a lot more than i did as just a movie. the constant aversion to gore was really distracting for me, along with the movie’s sloppy reliance on cg and compositing

Huh. I didn’t notice any aversion to gore. I think I saw something about the version on Netflix being “uncut.” When Pitt “rescues” the young Israeli cadet from her bite wound, it’s awful spurty, gory. I have to go mention this in the 3x3 rescues thread now. :)

There’s an uncut version and the theatrical release version, oddly enough. The downside is that the uncut version is only stereo, not 5.1 audio.

The Battered Bastards of Baseball is a documentary about the Portland Mavericks and their early days. The only independent baseball team in America at that time, they were started by Kurt Russel’s father (he even played for them), who was also an actor. NPR featured the show on a picks of the week style program this morning. I’m going to have to catch this one this weekend.

Copper Season 2 was good.

I watched this recently, then watched another movie Netflix immediately recommended: Absentia

Both felt very Lovecraftian in terms of the bad thing and the ending. (it’s all bad)

i usually don’t watch documentaries at all, but for whatever reason this caught my eye when they added it and i enjoyed the feel-good story it had to tell. in fact, i usually don’t care for sports, either, but this project has a lot of character and held my interest

Wow, what a great little movie! I knew when I read this description that it sounded right up my alley, and it sure did pay off. I never knew the story of the Mavericks, that they even existed. Didn’t know Kurt Russell’s father’s story or that he was such a figure in the westerns or such a fan of baseball. Definitely worth a look.

I remember watching Kurt Russell on David Letterman years and years ago. Back when Kurt was kind of popular in movies still. Anyway, he was regaling David with stories about his days playing baseball. One of the stories got out of hand though when he related how one of the team members decided he was going to get revenge on another player for something he had done to him. So he went out and got gonorrhea off a prostitute in order to give it to either the guy’s wife or his girlfriend, I can’t remember which one. The whole time, Kurt is just laughing his ass off about it too.

I just remember David sitting there, his mouth slightly open as he obviously thought to himself, “Well, I guess I asked for this…”.

I haven’t seen the movie yet (in spite of bringing it up…I just haven’t had a chance to catch it yet) , so I hope it’s mentioned in there as that was obviously from the time he was playing with the Mavericks.

Actually the movie includes some footage of a player on Johnny Carson, but no Letterman.

The Battered Bastards of Baseball is the ultimate underdog story. I loved every single minute.

Not everyone loves it.
