Just a warning, but the makeup isn’t done well in the pilot episode, and the first time you meet Emily she looks like a crazy zombie. Everything looks fine for the rest of the series, so watch at least the second episode if the first one doesn’t quite do it for you. And ignore the California mountains you see in the background. It was just CGI they used to make Stars Hollow, Connecticut look a little sexier.

And no, that isn’t how they talk. Although Lorelei and Rory do have a neighbor who talks like that, I believe. Everybody else more or less speaks normally, if maybe a little fast.

Cool. I can do New England.

Amy Sherman Palladino apparently grew up in New England and also sort of took some obvious inspiration from the loonies in George Roy Hill’s Funny Farm. “You’re not knockin’ him out, you’re just pissin’ him off.”

Plus the pilot opens with a La’s song (yes, that one, about heroin) and closes with a Yo La Tengo song. Now are you interested?

Speaking of accents, Is anybody familiar with RI accents? TJ, Luke’s sister’s boyfriend and eventual brother in law has an odd accent, that almost perfectly matches the accents of RI natives that I’ve met. The actor (it appears to be more or less his real accent) seems to be from Brooklyn though. (although many of the North East accents are quite similar anyways).

I think that he’s cited as being from RI at one point in the series, but Luke later refers to the Bachelor party as being “Lords of Flatbush”, so I dont really know what to make of it.

I’m happy to talk about basically any aspect of the show if people want to. Might even be worth it’s own thread.

I’m pretty familiar with Rhode Island accents. I grew up there! :D

If you’re interested in Rhode Island and other New England accents, you NEED to listen to this.

But yeah, Luke’s brother-in-law does sound like he could be from RI.

The Idle Thumbs gaming podcast has added a regular host named Danielle Riendeau who is a native Rhode Islander. Most episodes she’ll indulge in the accent, and it is rich. I’ve moved around the states quite a lot, but running into people with thick regional accents is always rare. She’s a pleasure to hear, and a welcome addition to the crew.

Oh yeah! I don’t listen to Idle Thumbs nearly as much as I should, but I do enjoy hearing her, especially because I tend to forget she is a Rhode Islander in between every time I listen to one of their podcasts, so it always feels like a new discovery.

Hah, that’s great.

I went to college in RI, and I’ve been around New England quite a bit (parents currently live in VT). I don’t have one, but I do love NE accents.

Silver Linings Playbook is on Netflix now, and so is 3 Days to Kill. I know nothing about either movie except they both got positive receptions on Qt3 podcasts, I believe, so I’ll be adding them to my list (no longer a queue!)

I was pretty underwhelmed by Silver Linings Playbook. It has some good performances, but by the end it’s very much a bog standard romantic comedy. If you like that sort of thing, it’s perfectly decent, but it was surprisingly rote compared to what I had been led to believe.

3 Days to Kill is better than it has any right to be. It’s a bit schmaltzy, but I was entertained throughout.

Gilmore Girls? Really guys…what’s next on the recommendation list? Dawson’s Creek? Party of Five? Charmed?

I will concede that Gilmore Girls is a well executed version of what it is (not sure what you call those shows), but it can’t escape it’s teen soap opera nature.

Richard Dawson has a creek named after him?

3 Days to Kill is by Luc Besson? Well now I’m intrigued. Thanks for the rec!

Prime-Time Soap Opera, I think (as distinct from daytime ones).

It might be the best Kevin Costner movie. It is not amazing but it is well done and entertaining.

That’s usually all I want from a movie.

Better than Waterworld or The Postman? You jest, sir.

Written by Besson. Directed by McG, if I recall correctly.

Who also directed the pilot episode to Supernatural! I’m in!
