I just watched the first episode of that last night on a whim too. I’m not sure if it’s for me, but I’ll give it another episode or two.

Watched about half of it last night. It’s really good. They use a lot of passages from his memoir, which obviously is great for directly sharing his experiences. What’s weird is that they sound like they’re read by him. But then he makes reference to his illness and inability to eat or speak. So I guess they intentionally got a voice actor who sounds like him to do the readings? Both a nice touch and I guess a little creepy.

Yeah, I really loved Life Itself. It was so moving to me - this was a man I “knew” and admired for at least 36 years. When he and Gene would discuss an obscure film and talk about its artistry it intrigued my young mind and led me to seek them out and hope to learn to see what they saw. They turned my love of commercial movies into a love of all film. The doc had me in tears on quite a few occasions and I highly recommend it.

Then I would strongly recommend Phantom of the Paradise. Except that Netflix seems to have removed it since I last watched it. Bastards!

A couple of recent additions:
Three Kings - I think this is the first time I can recall liking George Clooney in a movie, although to be fair I’m pretty sure it’s also the second one I’d seen him in after he was sadly miscast in the generally wretched Batman & Robin. I also recall it being a really funny romp through the fucked-up-ness of the first Iraq War. It’s been ages, though.

Crank - gloriously stupid action.

Also, I have not seen this and cannot recommend it for this reason, but there is apparently a movie called Wolf Cop (or maybe Wolfcop), about a police officer who becomes a werewolf. It’s calling me. CALLING ME.

Haha yeah I saw that. It’s listed in the “comedy” section on mine, so I have a feeling I know what it’ll ultimately be like…

Atari: Game Over is a cool documentary about the rise and fall of Atari with cuts to a less interesting search for the buried E.T. cartridges.

I just got an email from Netflix saying that it thinks I would like enjoy watching something called “Scrotal Recall.” The description says: “In his quest for true love, Dylan found chlamydia. Joined by friends Evie and Luke, he relives past encounters as he notifies all his former partners.” I don’t think Netflix understands me at all.

Apparently it’s a decent britcom.

I got that exact email…bizarre.

Ugh, now I’ve got the email too. It’s apparently contagious.

Oh good, I do feel better it’s not just me. Though I do watch a lot of British comedy, so that could explain it as well.

Yeah it seems like they just acquired the rights to it and immediately put it out there. Probably why everyone is seeing those now.

Scrotal Recall – what’s not to like? Send it to everyone!

I did not get the email. I guess Netflix thinks more highly of me.

As do we all, Tom! :)

Wolfcop is flawed but has two great moments. It’s also 80 minutes long and doesn’t drag. I have a feeling Wolfcop 2 will be the one to watch, but I’d still recommend it if you like that sort of movie.

The Babadook
Amazing Australian horror film. The kid is intensely unpleasant but that’s an intentional, considered choice.

Leaving Netflix at the end of April, any of these worth checking out before they go?

Airplane
Along Came Polly
Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood
Funny Face
Life Is Beautiful
Robocop
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze
The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement
Skyfall
Fun Size
Bridezillas
Red Dawn

I’ve seen Airplane, Life is Beautiful and Skyfall. All 3 great movies that are excellent for their own reasons. I haven’t seen the others. I’m assuming the Robocop in question here is the new Robocop, which I haven’t watched yet. And the Red Dawn is … well, new or old, I haven’t seen either one.

The old Red Dawn was pretty interesting for its time - I doubt it hold up very well though.

The Princess Diaries is awesome, if you enjoy teenage romance flicks in the best of disney traditions with live actors.

Bridezillas is everything that is wrong with the world today, condensed into a single show without a shred of decency. Personally, I think this kind of reality show should be banished.
