The new Robocop is surprisingly good. Not as good as the original, and frustratingly PG-13, but a lot better than I would have expected from a gratuitous remake. Um. The old TMNT movies were decent, I think? I haven’t seen them in a billion years. I’m sure even if they weren’t they’d still be roughly eight hundred million trillion times better than the Bay version.
I actually thought Along Came Polly was worth watching, if you like those actors and that kind of film. Skyfall is outstanding. The new Robocop is actually great, but I think this is the original that’s falling off, or not?
I don’t know, I saw someone link to an article about these titles on Facebook earlier today, and when they got to Robocop, their description was of the recent film, but they included an image of the original. I don’t know if that was just laziness or a mistake about which was leaving.
Possible - probably the same article I saw, since it was an image of the old Robocop that got me thinking it was the one falling off. The new Robocop just got on Netflix really recently, so it would surprise me if it was leaving so soon, but who knows about these things?
I watched Along Came Polly on the recommendation above.
That was a weird movie. Jennifer Aniston is supposed to be this wild free-spirit kind of gal, and yet, the actress seems really mis-cast in that role and doesn’t come across as all that free spirited. Jenna Elfman from Dharma & Greg? A character, or perhaps an actress like that would fit this role much better.
Still, not a bad movie, just a strange one that never got big laughs or great chemistry out of the stars. The one scene which did get me to laugh out loud:
“Ever heard of men yelling FIFTY when they orgasm?”
“Oh yeah”.
I did check on Robocop. It is indeed the old Robocop that says that it’s available until May 1st. The new one has no such warning. I did watch the old one already back in the 80s. I’m kind of tempted to see it again. But I see so few movies a year, every repeat viewing means one less new movie I’ll see this year. I’ve already been indulging too much in that instinct this year by watching Edge of Tomorrow 5 times already.
Why did this scene make you laugh?
Was re-watching Black Hawk Down the other day and it strikes me that the number of notable actors in this movie is simply astounding (especially for present day):
Josh Hartnett, Ewan McGregor, Tom Sizemore, Eric Bana, William Fichtner, Sam Shephard, Hugh Dancy, Ron Eldard, Ioan Gruffudd, Jason Isaacs, Jeremy Piven, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Tom Hardy, Matthew Marsden, Orlando Bloom, Brian van Holt and Ty Burrell.
It’s quite a list.
Also: BHD is FOURTEEN (!) years old already.

One of my all-time favorite war movies, I need to watch it again soon.
Watching it in HD for the first time was like watching a new movie. It really think it was beautifully made.
I’ve been avoiding the blu-ray because it lacks the amazing special features of the 3 DVD set, but maybe I should reconsider…
Oh. Well I’m not sure what the amazing special features are, but I’m sure you can find an inexpensive copy of the blu-ray at a local used movie place… if you have any of those around. Thats what I did with the special edition of Lord of the Rings. The DVD set came in these great boxes with a lot of extra stuff, and the blu-ray just came in normal blu-ray cases. So I got the DVD set, and then eventually got the blu-ray special edition for like $20 or something, and put them in the DVD box. :D
I love when Ty Burrell pops up in movies prior to his Modern Family career. I rewatched Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead recently and I was delighted to discover that he was the rich asshole guy.

Just watched A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night and I loved it.
It’s a vampire story that feels like a Jim Jarmusch remake of Let the Right One In. There’s not a lot of dialogue, very little action, and there are long lingering shots of people who are struggling with internal issues, but without any accompanying voice over or other narrative tool to help the audience understand what’s happening if they’re not paying attention to the context of those character’s lives. It’s a character study above all else.
Now that I’ve told you why you might not like it, let me just say I can’t recommend it enough because of those very things.
The “Girl” in this film is a vampire who prowls the streets of a fictional Iranian town called Bad City. She finds her victims in the men who abuse others…and in a culture in which misogyny is quite often overlooked, if not downright supported at times, she’s not going hungry.
It’s a visually arresting film at times. Shots of the Girl roaming the streets while wearing a chador (a robe meant to hide a woman’s head and body for the sake of modesty) like it’s a Bela Lugosi inspired vampire’s cape, oil fields belching smoke into the sky, and scenes of dark, lonely streets that are sparsely populated make for a haunting and grimly beautiful tapestry.
Check it out if you like character driven films, or just something that’s unique yet somehow familiar.
I’ll also add that if you’d told me I wouldn’t find a scene of a vampire riding a skateboard utterly ridiculous but oddly poetic, I would’ve told you you were crazy.
That is a great film. Very similar in tone to Let the Right One In: incredibly fresh, almost alien setting; interesting protagonist; unique take on vampirism; beautiful in its sparse cinematography. Highly recommended.

Side note: Before I watched A Girl Walks Home at Night, I tried to sit through the god awful Jinn that was just added to Netflix streaming yesterday. I couldn’t make it past the 20 minute mark (I was cooking dinner at the same time), but I did cut it off at a scene that almost made up for the pain I endured before I had to stop. The main character is watching a video his father made for him before he (the father) died. It’s supposed to be a poignant and touching moment…but they quick cut back and forth to the son who’s watching it years later…and in about the third shot, there’s suddenly a comical amount of tears running down his face. I’m talking flood level. I couldn’t stop laughing for about 5 minutes. It’s around the 18:40 mark. It’s worth it if you love MST3K.
To honor Mother’s Day, I’d just like to remind y’all that The Babadook is still available for Instant Watch.
I just watched this last week and enjoyed it. It’s slow-paced but interesting. Like hepcat says it’s a bit character-driven rather than plot-driven.
i’d love to know what you thought of It’s Such A Beautiful day, because it was one of the darkest things i’ve ever seen. like a cruel funny; a tough watch, but something that’s just as affecting as it is unpleasant
