I’m having trouble discerning between recommendations and warnings lately.

Hey, at least Roseanne has John Goodman and Martin Mull.

And Buffy writer Joss Whedon.

I’m new to the Netflix deal, but am enjoying it so far. So far the mix of Spartacus episodes off Starz Play and old Masterpeice Theater stuff my wife likes to watch has resulted in some pretty comical “recommendations”. One that caught my eye though was a Robin Hood series that aired recently on BBC. Has anyone seen this? Is it worth getting into? I’m not expecting high drama and stage acting, honestly if it’s about the same quality as Dr. Who or Merlin (the series) I’d be fine with it.

Probably closer to Merlin than Dr. Who. It’s alright to above-average.

You’ve got most of Mythbusters, four seasons of Top Gear, all of 30 Rock, etc. I wouldn’t worry about the Robin Hood yet.

And Milk & Cheese cameos.

Mythbusters, like a lot of discovery TV, I find I can’t watch easily when its streamed or on DVD. The show basically has only about maybe 15 minutes of actual interesting footage, so they stretch everything out as long as they can, and reiterate everything after every commercial break. It just gets more annoyingly obvious when the commercial break isn’t 5 minutes long. The show needs a recut, bare bones version, like they did with Dragon Ball Z.

The best part of Mythbusters for me is fantasizing about being a Mythbuster. It looks fun and a lot of work too. Plus I get to work along side Kari and perv on her when she’s not looking.

I enjoyed the first two seasons. The third not so much.

This is important. Also, does Watch Instantly ever support subtitles? Brick, like Trainspotting in a different genre, often rewards using subtitles until you get a handle on the 21st century film noir patter.

Not user-selectable. Which means that you only get subtitles on some foreign language films and not, for example, anime. It’s one of my biggest complaints about the service.

Then in the case of Brick I definitely recommend the physical dvd. Come to think of it, there are a number of good movies and shows that I wouldn’t recommend without access to subtitles for newcomers (most notably the Wire, which of course is not a watch instantly imminent threat).

The assassination of Jesse James is one movie I watched that I wouldn’t recommend watching without subtitles. I watched the whole thing on Blu-ray without subtitles. I just kind of assumed that you’re not supposed to understand everything being said by the characters, especially by Jesse himself, who was completely incomprehensible to me at times. But after watching the movie, I came to the thread in Qt3 and discovered that everyone else understood the characters in the movie just fine. So I probably should have turned on the subtitles after all. I don’t normally have trouble with understanding characters in movies, so Jesse James was a real stand-out for me. I didn’t understand half the dialog in that movie.

Jimmy Stewart plays a sheriff who doesn’t carry a gun. Funny western where the cowboys sing and the frontier women do all the fighting.

That’s not entirely true, but it is as far as the 360 interface goes, apparently. And it hardly applies to their entire catalog, anyway.

Yeah, I know they’ve been working on it, but it’s got a looooong way to go and the current focus seems to be serving the deaf/hard of hearing community. Which I suppose is probably the right place to start, but certainly doesn’t address the things I want subtitles for. And multiple audio tracks. And, well, the whole host of controls that Netflix simply doesn’t offer in their streaming player.

There’s always physical media…
