Huh, I didn’t realize CBS had the rights to all versions of Star Trek. I thought it was just TOS. Sounds like it’s about time for another marathon rewatch of DS9!
In case it was not posted already, charmtrap notedthat The Secret in their Eyes has been added to watch instantly. It’s probably one of the best films I saw last year, a stylish mystery with some fantastic dialog, humor, and a very genuine feel to the Argentinian setting. The closest thing I can compare it to that pushes many of the same buttons is Amenabar’s Thesis, but they have different points of emphasis.
What are you, still in high school?

Hey man, I recently watched all three of the Girl with Dragon Tattoo movies back to back. I didn’t even wait for the upcoming American version before doing so, knowing full well it would probably be a better experience. It’s not like I go out of my way to avoid films that can’t afford folks who speak English.
I’ve actually not seen DS9 past season one. Is it worth a watch?

I can watch Netflix streaming through my 360 or PS3. Last night I rooted around on Amazon’s various instruction pages and found that while I can watch movies/TV that I download by renting or buying via Windows Media Center, there doesn’t seem to be any way to get these streaming movies from my computer over to my TV.
Why should I invest in a Roku box, when I already have Netflix on my 360/PS3?
So until Amazon makes a deal with the consoles, I’m sticking with Netflix, even though I’m already a Prime member.
Also I had the first episode of Chuck from Amazon sitting on my hard drive from years ago when they gave it away before the series even started. I could play it fine through the Unbox player, but Windows Media Center first had me do an upgrade for “DRM compatibility” then said I had to go to Amazon to get the license. Amazon said I was good to go, and would helpfully play Chuck both in a browser and in their own application, but it still wouldn’t let WMP play it.
So I’m doubtful about getting WMP to play anything on my TV.
PlayOn can play purchased and downloaded Amazon videos, but I really have no idea if/how it will handle streaming. If it’s something they have to add, I can only imagine they’ll end up adding it only to the premium, subscriber version. Assholes.
In the unpopular TV opinions thread, I said that DS9 is not only the best Trek, it’s probably my favorite scifi TV show of all time.
Season 1 had its share of stinkers and more than its share of ‘lets repurpose a TNG script to work on a space station’ episodes, but once they start embracing the strength of their setting and their cast the show really solidifies. I think season 2 is far stronger than season 1, but when Ira Behr takes over as show runner from Michael Piller, and gets the show out of the Roddenberry Box in the 3rd season you start getting some of the best scifi on TV, then or since.
This is mostly my opinion, which I’m pretty sure is always 100% right, but there are those who would say that the show doesn’t really take off until season 4, when Michael Dorn/Worf joins the cast. I honestly find this to be a pretty weak season for reasons we can talk about in a dedicated thread but…
Man, getting too into it. Yes, I would say that DS9 is absolutely worth watching. Especially if you loved TNG when you were a kid, but aren’t necessarily a kid anymore.
That seals the deal for me. I’ll start watching it today. It was suggested that I only watch certain eps of season 1 then go directly to season 2. This sound right?
Only if your time is really that precious. If I were watching it again, the only episode I’d really skip would be Move Along Home, which is widely considered one of the series dumbest episodes and definitely the least favorite first season episode with the cast. Q-Less is pretty bad too, despite being the only DS9 episode featuring Q. It was like part one of the eventual complete declawing of the Q character that would play out in Voyager. There are plenty of good season 1 episodes, including stuff that hints at later developments (Captive Pursuit) or shows the start of character development and relationships that will drive the rest of the show (The Storyteller).
Also, Miles O’Brien has got to be my all-time favorite Trek character. He’s the only Starfleet main character ever shown who A) is a racist and B) isn’t an officer. Though Garak is up there. Oh man, DS9 is so awesome.
Don’t know if this helps but this was the response I got from Amazon when I asked about console compatibility.
You can enjoy over 30,000 movies and TV shows to watch on your Xbox 360. It’s easy to connect your Xbox 360 console to a Windows PC to watch videos from Amazon Video On Demand.
To begin you will need to be sure that the Amazon Unbox player (link found below) is installed on your computer.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/video/ontv/player
Your next step will be to confirm that you have Windows Media Player 11 or higher installed. If you don’t have it yet you can find it using the following link:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/products/windows-media-player
Then, on your PC, open Windows Media Player and perform the following:
- Click Library, then Media Sharing.
- Select Share my media, then OK. Windows Vista users may receive a User Account Control (UAC) prompt, select Continue.
- Windows Media Player will search for devices on your network.
- Click your Xbox console, and then click Allow. When done, click OK.
Next, navigate to the Media area of your Xbox 360 Dashboard and select Video. If the videos on your PC aren’t displayed, press X and select your PC.
For additional support, visit Xbox.com Support or contact Microsoft at 1-800-4MY-XBOX.
At this time, Play Station 3 is not a supported device for Amazon Video on Demand content. I’m sorry for the disappointment. You can visit the link below to see a list of all currently supported devices for Amazon Video on Demand:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/video/ontv/
We’re regularly working on improvements to your Video On Demand experience. I’ve let the Video On Demand team know you’re interested in this feature.

PlayOn can do Amazon VOD streaming, but with rentals (like the free rental I got with a disc purchase around Christmas) it required starting it on my PC first, probably to acquire the license. Can’t comment on free Prime streaming since I am leeching Prime from my mom.
Unless I’m missing something Netflix doesn’t have any season of any Trek series available for streaming yet. Have I not refreshed Netflix recently enough or are you planning on getting discs?

I loved DS9 when it was on when I was younger and I recently went back and watched every episode in the series. I highly recommend watching all of them. Yeah the move along home episode is weak but I still have seen it at least 3 times.
DS9 is awesome do not miss it.
Since Omniscia just mentioned that Fish Tank is now available in the podcast thread for that film, I became curious about something. This was one of my favorite films last year, and I want to spread the word about it. Do any of you folks do that Netflix/Facebook linking thing? If so…thoughts?
Thanks.

This is absolutely true. I think it’s fantastic for the modern-art-is-shit crowd and their opponents, and everyone in between. Don’t read reviews, just watch it, and trust that the first 45 minutes or so are essential context for what comes next.
I agree wholeheartedly about the first 45 minutes. I felt the rest was disappointing but still entertaining.
I hesitate to say much more. People should watch it and come to their own conclusions.
