Yes, I watched The Stand recently on a holiday weekend marathon on cable. IMHO it stands up well. Sure a bit of old music and hairstyles, but I still think it was one of the better book to tv adaptations.

On a side note, I just started watching Babylon 5 series on netflix, and I am very surprised that it holds up to my nostalgia. To me, it is as good of a show as it was over a decade ago. I’ve been watching the shows back to back with every spare minute I get, and its a good trip back in time to see a good series. I was always scared I would find the show wasn’t that good it I watched it many years later, I was wrong.

My next test will be watching Space: Above and Beyind if it is available. It was one of my other faves. We’ll see if years later it was as good as I remember.

Gordon, you give Elizabethtown a lot more credit than I did when I saw it. I found it insultingly bad and it’s one of the few times I left a theater angry for having my brain’s junk kicked repeatedly. Every moment felt false and I felt like I was watching someone try very hard to make a Cameron Crowe film and failing very badly. The fact that it was Crowe himself made it all the more disappointing. Bloom was terrible, Dunst was bad (not sure how much was the material and how much was her), it’s the only Susan Sarandon performance I’ve seen that I disliked so I felt like that was an achievement in and of itself. And that all night phone with the non-quippy quip about peaking is the kind of crap I would expect now on a weak episode of gossip girl, but not from two adults in a Cameron Crowe flick.

I just watched the entire first season (6 episodes) of The League. I have not laughed that hard aloud in a while. I hope they slap season 2 up there soon. Just great.

The hair and music are pretty cheesy along with the special effects, but it’s not bad.

Definately geared toward a younger audience, but I appreciated being able to watch those with my daughter instead of re-watching episodes of Avatar for the tenth time.

I ran into something a couple of days ago that I’ve never had happen. There are two PBS series that are up, one on WWII and one on U.S. National Parks, both are by Ken Burns I believe. Anyway, it doesn’t mater which episode I choose, but it gives me a simple “This can’t be played”. It doesn’t happen with anything else as far as I can tell, and it seemed a little suspicious that they were related. I tried them again today, same thing. Anyone know what it means?

Post links and other people can try it out to see if it’s a general issue with the episodes or something specific involving your machine/connection/whatever.

Ken Burns The War and National Parks America’s Best Idea. I did notice when I checked again they say they are due to be removed May 5th. I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

Sounds like the show you’re describing is Nova ScienceNow, not Nova. It’s a spinoff of Nova, but focuses on cutting edge science that’s still being developed. In fact, it’s the only show on TV that I know about that focuses on what things are currently being researched, as opposed to scientific things that have been established for a while now. The core show, Nova, for example, focuses on what’s already known, not what’s being researched now.

I’ve been a big fan of Nova ScienceNow since the show started in … I think it was 2005 or 2006. I even liked the original host better, though Neil Degrass Tyson has grown on me over time. If you get to watch the original season of the show, do so. It’s really good. The whole show packs a LOT of information into every show, and it’s not like TLC or discovery channel documentaries where they have five minutes worth knowledge portrayed over 45 minutes of show.

My favorite episode of Nova ScienceNow is from its first season where talk about RNAi. If you haven’t heard of RNAi, you should definitely check out that episode. It’s something that’s still being researched and not being taught in science classes yet, but could totally change medical research. And it all starts with experimentation on Petunias.

Oh, cool – that’s a shame netflix only has those six episodes. Even though the show is geared slightly younger, it doesn’t feel dumbed down at all, so I find myself digging the series over some of the dryer, slower nova type documentaries, that like you said, repeat themselves over and over.

Just thought I’d chime in to say Orlando parked next to us at Sports Authority last night - was a bit timely since I had just read this thread an hour or so earlier…

Toy Story 3 is now available. I know there are some fans here. Too lazy to link.

I’d like to second The Square. Good stuff.

I’ve started watching Sons of Anarchy, it’s a pretty good show. Seasons 1 & 2 are up on instant now.

SoA is a terrible, terrible show that I can’t stop watching. The plots are absurd, much of the acting comes off as posturing, and there isn’t a single likable character. It’s a late night soap opera that’s so bad it’s good.

Katey Sagal is awesome in Sons of Anarchy.

Agreed.

Seasons 1 and 2 are all you need… Season 3 made me decide to give up on the show.

I just finished S1 and I have to say you nailed it. Apparently being in a motorcycle club is equivalent to being a Somali warlord, except with more gunplay. And sex.

H.

Sad to admit it being a years-long Kubrick fanboi, but just started to watch ‘The Killing’ last night for the first time. Still need to finish up the last 20 minutes. Love the lighting, love the hard boiled Jim Thompson dialogue, and love Sterling Hayden, as awesome as he always is.

I don’t know how often Somali warlords hug and cry and whisper softly to one another and kiss each other on the lips, either, but it’s safe to venture it’s far less often than these Sam Crow fellas do.

Marwencol hit today.
