The amazing thing about emancipation, or one of them, is how the former enslaved Americans handled the aftermath of emancipation and the end of centuries of brutal oppression. Not with a bloodbath, but with dignity, grace, and power. A letter like that is far more devastating than any act of violent retribution might have been, as justified in many was as such retribution might be.
