I just wanted to add that Draikin “conveniently” decided to only quote the stuff from the IGN preview that would support his pre-determined worldview. The article is overwhelmingly positive.
To sum up, Fallout 3 looks and feels exactly what you’d expect a hybrid of Fallout 2 and Oblivion to look and feel like. Even after an hour of play, it’s more than evident that it’s as deep as the ocean, handles responsively, and brings enough fan-service from Bethesda’s two franchises to make it a strong contender for the best RPG of the year. The only knock against it right now, other than the fact that role-players who like to go light on the combat are up against frequent skirmishes here, is that we can only play it an hour at a time.
Nothing surprsing about the above.
He’s like the Sean Hannity/Fox News of video games!

Substitute the distance Electrical tower for a watchtower of some sort, and you’ll easily get Oblivion. WHICH MUST MEAN IT SUCKS!!! OH NOESSSS!!!
That’s an engine issue and perspective though. IGN is being specific on that, and it’s not a surprise at all. Hell, it’s not even like it’s their fault. Fallout 3 isn’t going to be Fallout because it’s not 2d isometric, and it wasn’t going to be anyway.
It was already clear from screenshots of Van Buren that it was 3d, with isometric views available and most likely normal third person cameras. Quite possibly a free camera within a certain range. But that alone would infuriate obsessives, and well, did. Until they got a new Fallout 3 to hate.
Draikin is doing some wonderfully selective quoting, and doing it poorly.
HEY! I’d better see another head on that fucker real soon!

Another new preview at GameSpy:

Called The Enclave, the new government is ruled by President John Henry Eden (voiced by Malcolm McDowell) and its laws are enforced by the powerful Brotherhood of Steel. The metal-clad badasses have taken over the Pentagon and are alerted to your presence by eyebots that should be avoided at all costs. Unfortunately, our time with Fallout 3 came to an end when a Brotherhood of Steel helicopter dropped off a group of troops right in front of us.
I’m guessing this is a mistake.
Kind of an opposites attract sort of thing, huh?

What’s the point of reskinning Oblivion as Fallout and make Fallout 3? They ran out of ideas for an Oblivion sequel? It makes so little business sense to spend millions (on the license) just to create an Oblivion clone with Fallout art work.
You’re right, it would have made no sense at all for them to have done that. I’m glad they didn’t.

This is true. I much rather spend more millions on developing original content that has a higher chance on failure, but I suppose thamer’s an expert on IP investment. Tell it like it is Thamer!

I’m still trying to wrap my head around how “Oblivion with Guns ™” is supposed to be a bad thing…
It’s not a bad thing, an “Oblivion with guns™” would be a great shooter/rpg.
But there are better things. Like Fallout 1 and 2. And hopefully 3.
The biggest concern about that for me is in regards to the NPCs from Fallouts 1 & 2 being so appealing.
I really enjoyed the conversations with Sulik, Marcus, Lenny, Goris. And even non-animated NPCs seemed more alive. Went through just about every conversation path across multiple games …
In Oblivion, the main characters alone felt like lifeless animatronic representations. I didn’t really get any joy out of their conversations, and didn’t really pick up on distinct character as much.
Hopefully that won’t carry over. I’d like to see a preview of that.
It will be online. In fact, we’re trying a new thing where we capture the gameplay footage while it’s played onstage in HD, so (fingers crossed) hopefully the full gameplay from the TV demo will be up on our site in HD by this evening. There’s also a Todd Howard interview before the gameplay demo.
I’d also like to say that the X-Play editorial staff (especially Adam) has busted their asses to get good gaming content in the E3 shows this year. I think the 35 demos we have booked will do a decent job of that.
You might be right if it was just an Oblivion clone, but it shares much more with Fallout than the former.
Please, please don’t make me explain. This is a dead horse that’s been reduced to a mass of gory goo.
Kudos on broadcasting the press briefings commercial free this year!

Just saw the demo during MS press conference. Everything I didn’t want to see in a Fallout game is there, and Todd is proud of it.
