As this hasn’t reached the level of Thamer and his active encouragement, I don’t think we need to bring out the full artillery.

Why not? Draikin’s posts consist either of nonsense (like saying Rock Band isn’t a game) or outright lies. We already know his position on Fallout 3 (hint: he doesn’t like it), and he’s obviously not here to engage or discuss the game in anything other than absolute terms. Plus he will occasionally break into completely unrelated threads to talk about how Fallout 3 will rape babies or whatever.
I say sic Angie on him.
Those seem like the best reasons to simply ignore him.

Because you aren’t a gamer anymore and have forgotten what it’s like to have fun at face value? Congrats, you’re the same as an amateur music or food critic who thinks they have to nitpick everything in order to be taken seriously.
It really does feel like a lot of writers have decided that this is the game where they will start hedging their bets and not give the standard happy-go-lucky previews for fear of backlash post-release. Or maybe even pre-release. While I’m all for more honest impressions in previews, it does feel like they are reaching in some cases. What, a Bethesda game resembles their previous work? But they’re so known for branching out to completely different genres!
Maybe it’s that this demo did little to show how Fallout 3 is truly different from Oblivion. Ok, the lock-picking mini-game is slightly different (and better) but the dialogue trees, skill breakdowns and overall feel seem so much like Oblivion, at least in this early stage of the game, that the untrained eye could mistake it for a mod.
Dear god, two RPGs share mechanics that are common to all RPGs. Clearly, this is just an Oblivion mod.

It strikes me that it would be better for Bethesda to just release this game a year later, with no hype, no news, or any interaction with the outside world. Quietly release it and let people enjoy it without the charged tension.
It is kind of humorous how a development firm best known for their ugly but vast open RPG worlds and Terminator games has wound up in one of the biggest shit-tossing storms in the videogame community these days.

What the fuck does “Fallout 3-style evolution” even mean anyway? He’s dissing it for being similar to an old game but at the same time suggesting that it’s somehow more evolved than RPG conventions on the same gameplay features and needs to be more like itself? boggle
