A Google image search for “truffle shank” to pick two words at random, yields this:

The image wasn’t originally named that; I renamed it because I didn’t want to mess with the “long-string-of-numbers-assigned-by-flickr” name that it had before.

What’s that? Fallout 3? Oh! Uh… This picture is what a mutant might look like after you blast it?

Some actual news. Release date has been announced:

October 28 for NA, 31 for Europe.

and 3 new screens:

I guess I should make up my mind whether or not I want to get the survival edition deal from Amazon. It’s expensive, but man that Pip Boy clock looks friggin’ rad.

It’s probably not worth it but it’s so hard to resist!

Jesus. The marketing people really think that the bloody mess perk is a big deal, don’t they? It’s kind of like introducing a new sports car and making sure that every promo shot features the extra-wide cup holders.

I really do like the way this game is looking. So tempting to make a “wow gayness” joke about that second screen.

probably trying to target the gears of war crowd

“Look! Gore!”

I don’t think that’s a bloody mess screenshot . . .

There was a discussion of the level of violence in FO3 over at GT a few weeks ago and Kathode didn’t really answer the question of how violent the game is without Bloody Mess on. He did say that some of the screenshots and scenes from the official trailer released at E3 were done with that perk not on.

I’m a little worried that we will be seeing some over the top and unrealistic violence even without Bloody Mess. Having a body disintegrate is fine if you are using a shot gun or going full auto at close range, but having it disintegrate after a sniper shot to the head is something else.

Looks good. I was expecting a mid Nov release date so that’s good news too.

Apparently, baseball bat < shotgun.

We’ve already seen a critical head shot without that issue in the official trailer.

Not that it might look weird in this game, but it was the same in the originals without the perk. Depending on the weapon there were a lot of critical, over-the-top type death animations.

edit: Wasn’t there one with the pistol where it blows off the head and half the body (or maybe a big hole)?

Right - all Bloody Mess does is to make it so that all types of damage trigger the extreme damage animations. So if you do an extreme amount of damage to someone’s head, their head will explode. Turn on Bloody Mess and bop them with a Nerf bat, and their head will explode in the same way.

Hah, Amazon bumped my shipment date earlier today, and I was wondering if a release date announcement was eminent.

Sure, but does that work in a first-person game with modern, realistic graphics? As much of a fan as I am of the first two games, that’s not a feature that has to be kept around. Also, having played through the original games recently with a non-“Bloody Mess” character, the number of times those extreme gore incidents ocurred was very low.

You clearly weren’t playing right – you’re supposed to amp up your gun skills and run around shooting everything in the eye.

Hrm? What do you mean by extreme gore? Every time I played, and I never use bloody mess, at least 2 out of 3 deaths involved extreme amounts of dismemberment.

Don’t get me wrong though, if stuff like that happens in this game it’ll probably look a lot weirder.

I can’t wait to see the Necromancer’s Choice!

From the videos and screens it looks like the enemy AI only ever rushes the PC. KG, Dan, or anyone else who has played/seen this live… should we expect any other behaviors or is this pretty much it? (Yes, I noticed the baseball bat… I know they’ve said enemies do take cover and whatnot but I’m still wondering if any of you have actually seen it)…

Yeah, you beat me to it.

Same. It seemed to happen every other kill after my characters got decent with their weapon.

I’m not sure I ever used Bloody Mess, as I thought it would get boring seeing it every time.
