Seriously? A debate about what constitutes a turn-based game?

The thread has like 1500 replies, it was bound to happen sooner or later.

EDIT: Apperently 4500. Typo/misread.

Enjoy it while you can. Once the game comes out, the “HOW DO I TURN-BASED?!” debate is going to look like Plato and Aristotle conversing in the the Lyceum.

So by that definition, Combat Mission wouldn’t be turn based, right?

Urge… to fuckin’ cut bitches… growing…

any bitches? or a particular brand of bitches?

Jebus, you guys aren’t serious, right?

He was describing an IGO-UGO system. Combat Mission is WEGO where (as I said before) orders a given in a sperate phase and the resolution phase is more of a replay where the player can only watch the results. You can change orders and move your characters at any time in Bioware’s games, particularly while time is moving in the game, which is the antithesis of turn-based. I hope this is clear enough?

As serious as cancer.

Rhythm is a dancer?

Oh, I see what you did there.

No, wait, I don’t.

I understand the difference between the two systems and I would call both of them turn-based, just as you did. I was calling into question roguefrog’s definition, not yours. He specifically said “Like chess, you cannot move a piece during your opponents turn.” That’s not strictly true in Combat Mission because the pieces do move at the same time, though the orders aren’t necessarily given at the same time. Also, in case it’s not clear, I wouldn’t call the Baldur’s gate games turn-based.

And mostly, I just wanted to be a smartass.

Not that this is anymore off topic…

Have we debated the definition of a “role-playing game” yet?

Oh god please no.

HAR HAR THE 80S HAR.

We should totally have an “embarrassing pictures from the 80s” thread. And then all the elderly Qt3ers who were old enough to wear track suits back then can post and be laughed at.

Snap is hardly '80s.

Rhythm is a Dancer was written in 1991, according to Wikipedia.

P.S. Fallout 3 is going to sell like gangbusters.

I certainly hope not. The market for gangbusters dropped out 40 years ago. I’m not sure I even know anybody who owns one.

If you want to get really precise about it (aka be a big steamy douchepie) then no it isn’t. But look at the rest of it – you’re gonna tell me that isn’t as 80s as you can get?

Anyone have a snappy 80s phrase I could use as a closer here? I’m dry!
