There’s already a long thread on NMA on how the videos one of the pirates has posted “prove” that Fallout 3 is a failure.
Yeah I was reading that as well. I think I’m a glutton for punishment. Anyhow, the leaked videos don’t seem any different than the demo videos that came out last month so I don’t know what the hell they’re talking about.
I will say watching the guy strafe around in 3rd person did look pretty bad though. Looks like ice skating. I’m guessing the same thing happened in Oblivion?

There’s a problem with this attitude. The fact that you download this game invariably, inevitably supports other people downloading too. This either happens directly due to the way torrents work, or indirectly by encouraging the pirates to keep on posting the game.
For a game of this magnitude I’m not entirely sure that explanation works, they’re going to keep hosting it and its going to get thousands of downloads. Now I almost never torrent games, hell I bought a copy of Fallout 1 & 2 off of ebay and waited a month for shipping rather than torrent them, but in this case I am paying for the game and my impact on the quality of the torrent is almost negligible.
I agree with Tankero on this point. Getting a head start is no excuse for stealing the game in the first place. And sure, you plan to buy it. Never heard that before. I don’t understand why people insist on coming to this site and bragging about stealing. I mean fuck people, go read the yenta thread and count how many assholes have been banned for this shit. If you are gonna steal* someones work at least have the decency to not brag about it.
*Yes I think even downloading it to test it is stealing. Even if you “plan on buying it”.

We come here and talk to people who make these games.
I don’t pirate them because I don’t want to even have the chance to feel guilty, especially when I come here to tell them that their game sucked. That’s past the rationale that I’d be buying a share in someone else’s crime by torrenting it, whether it was 50%, 10% or 0.001% ownership of it.
Well I have it completely paid off, so its a guaranteed sale.
I don’t see a whole lot of difference here with torrenting a copy of a game disc that you’ve broken but purchased. They still get my money in the end.
As for posting this, I’m quite sorry if this offends but I’d rather people know that there are a fair amount of people that do this -torrent and purchase. Hell everyone I know is planning on doing that for this game we just rarely announce that we’ve torrented because people always act like we’ve stolen something even though we’ve paid for it. And for a game like this I’m sure there’s going to be a heck of a lot more people dling it to get it early and paying for it. Though I’ve probably made my crime worse by posting this haven’t I? Dam.

Here’s the problem: we all know people who say they will be buying the game anyway to justify their use of a torrent. We all know that in many cases these people are not being honest. If you torrent Fallout 3 can you honestly say you will still be putting down $60 if after a few hours of playing you decide the game is really bad?
I can live with someone torrenting a game post-release and post-purchase in order to bypass certain copy protection schemes. Doing it ahead of time and expecting people to believe you are going to buy the game no matter what is not believable.
This is the internet, and I can understand people’s disbelief. But if you believe him when he says he is downloading it why don’t you believe him when he says he has paid for it? It’s a bit of a double standard if you choose to only believe the negative things about people.
It’s also generally a pretty sound strategy.
I’m tired of that attitude, and many people have it. It assumes that those that torrent have no conscience. You may not find it believable but I’ve seen it happen time and time again. If you want I can take a picture of my games rack and others. We all have a copy of Spore even though some of us didn’t find it to match the hype. If Fallout 3 doesn’t match the hype we also fully expect it to be modded in much the same way the Oblivion was making it the game we want making it a must have purchase. You and others may not find it believable but we do it and yes sometime we end up buying a stinker for it.

Maybe, but if you do it after release and purchase it’s more believable.
Sure, but I also know people who have lied about it. A co-worker who had Halo 2 reserved torrented the early french language version. “It’s not very good,” he told me, “but I’m still going to buy it for the multi-player.” I know for a fact he didn’t buy it.
So I’m sorry, I don’t buy the argument and I’m not giving you the benefit of the doubt.
There’s no way to validate any of his claims, so it seems you’d either write off the whole thing or not. Who’s to say after release whether he’s legit or not?
I understand we have particular sensitivities about the subject, and probably Morberis just needs to figure out now that some things just can’t be discussed on this board (kind of like not discussing porno around grandma), but give the guy an out here. He isn’t flaming.
“As a forum thread grows longer, the probability of a discussion involving piracy approaches one”, is the new Godwin’s law.
Thank you, this is my point expressed more fluidly.
(even that sentence sucked)
The two claims are not equal. Sane people don’t generally lie about doing things that are likely to be perceived as negative. Anyhow, if he is telling the truth, the bit about people not believing him shouldn’t matter to him.
I think it’s more important that he understands his “I’m just a drop in the bucket” when it comes to enabling and encouraging the dissemination stolen material is complete bullshit. That rationale is likely used by the legions of other people who are also doing it. You’re either doing it or you aren’t, and in this case you are.
Well I quite apologize, I had no intention of stirring it up like this. If I’m still here on release day I’ll post a pic of my copy of the game in this thread.
Edit: You’re argument has alot of merit Balsamic, I’ll reconsider my position. Though I’m going to take it that not many of you will believe that, so take from it what you will. I’m not unwilling to reconsider my position based upon ration arguments. But I would also like to hear your argument for why the “I’m just a drop in the bucket” argument doesn’t work for this but does (or does it not) work after you’ve purchased a copy.

I can’t argue with that.
I understand we have particular sensitivities about the subject, and probably Morberis just needs to figure out now that some things just can’t be discussed on this board (kind of like not discussing porno around grandma), but give the guy an out here. He isn’t flaming.
Don’t you think this is something we should be discussing, though? I understand that Tom doesn’t want this board to turn into something that causes developers to not want to come here, but ignoring the issue doesn’t do anyone any good. I’m reminded of a post that went up on Gamers With Jobs around the Spore DRM controversy that pointed out that we as gamers are passively supporting piracy because we either justify it under certain circumstances (lack of demo, inability to return a bad game, “annoying” copy protection) or we don’t want to discuss it at all. Then we refuse to accept the numbers the publishers put out, even though we’ve seen very passionately expressed frustration on the issue by people in the industry on this very board.
We have a report of piracy regarding the game this thread is about and people that think it’s justified under certain circumstances. If we aren’t going to discuss the issue here, where are we going to discuss it? Or are we just going to take the attitude that “some things just can’t be discussed on this board,” which is the moral equivalent to saying it’s ok.
So people only care when they lie?
I’m just thinking you catch more flies with honey, sugar.
