Phone call to amazon, I was trying to get them to combine my order for the game guide with my SE. The lady on the other end of the phone said the publisher had changed the release date to the 24th but that it hadn’t been updated on the web page yet. A customer service rep so maybe she got some bad info/was reading the wrong line.
edit: Gstaff@BethSoft says no go, 28th it is.
Hell, I hope it’s true. The sooner I get my hands on Fallout 3, the better. I’ll definitely be checking in at Amazon regarding the release date to see if it updates to the 24th.
Edit: Could the rep have been referring the guide being moved up to 10/24? It seems weird that a game would be released on a Friday.
Anyone remember the french magazine whose writers wanted to piss down the throat of Fallout 3’s music composer because it offended them so much?
Yeah, they reviewed it.
It’s long, so I’m just going to quote my favorite part:
Lambda players will probably enjoy it. But, us? Well, we still cannot swallow it, this mucky heresy. Sure, I could destroy it, dip it into a vat of hatred just to clean the insult. But it wouldn’t make it better. It wouldn’t bring Black Isle back. So if you don’t mind, I’m going to stop here and have a drink at the café of broken dreams.

What the hell is a Lambda player? Are they mocking the gays?
It probably means LARP in machine-translatish.
Yeah, that review sounds totally reasonable and level-headed. Was that written by Draikin himself? He is French, as I recall.

The author, in a fit of ‘cleverness’, must have used the Half Life logo(the letter lambda). The translator, as a moron, didn’t grasp that.

I wonder if Omar’s review is as harsh as portrayed in the translation. I wouldn’t put it past MrBumble to take a few liberties. You know, someone has to tell the truth, and it sure won’t be those sellout mainstream journos.
Speaking of morons. From the NMA forum:
Right, right. Don’t the Fallout nuts have higher standards than that? Or did being the British equivalent of Brian Crescente suddenly become something respectable?
Unfortunately, I have to take back what I just said. Turns out our translator misspelled ‘Joystick’, which is something else entirely.

I haven’t read it I don’t think the translation accentuates the harsh tone or comments.
I’d have to say he’s perfectly entitled to his opinion and that the piece is reasonnably argumented.
But this :
Lambda players will probably enjoy it. But, us? Well, we still cannot swallow it
Oh my. Us, the elite, the true players, us who have taste and demands, versus the people, the console playing morons, the lambda players.
The same Omar gave STALKER Clear Sky a 9/10. The fact that they want to cater to their elitist audience is totally fine, they have a niche and they stick to it. But this kind of statement which is basically “we own the truth and those who do not agree with us are idiots” infuriates me.

This is like a train wreck in progress!
It’s horrible! But my eyes can’t shift away until it has ended!
I can’t wait for Ben to get his hands on this.
It’ll be the best ZP ever.
EVAH!
The one which will make me cry all night onto my pillow.
The king is dead. Long live the king.
Fallout, RIP.
I still say it’s going to be a fun game that captures the feel of Fallout’s excellent world and is a good RPG experience overall. I think if you refuse to allow for that, then yeah, there is no way to enjoy it. That’s true of ANY game though. I refuse to believe Little Big Planet looks worth two shits. No matter if I would actually like it, if I played it I’d still not like it just for what it was.
There is nothing wrong with that. BUT. If you are going to “cry into your pillow” because … what? Fallout is dead to you? That’s all on you. You MADE that happen because you flat out refuse to accept change.
Listen, I can sympathize, I really can. I would have loved an isometric view, or turn base combat. Hell, I don’t see why VATS/Real Time can’t be one option, and if you want, the other option could have been when a fight breaks out the game reverst to turn based and the camera pulled out to an isometric view. Awesome, right? Sure. But, it’s not happening. If you enjoy Fallout as a world, you are just going to be punishing yourself by not looking past the things you don’t personally agree with and giving it a shot.
Also, I was looking at some screen shots of VanB, and you know? Sort of not doing it for me anymore.
On the plus side, I’m enjoying the hell out of Fallout Tactics, which I played to completion when it came out and haven’t really touched since. Tons of fun.
Maybe I’m a little miffed that I waited 2 days for Fallout discussion to revive itself here on QT3 and instead it’s Foxstab bitching and moaning AGAIN.

So what’s the deal here ? People who decided to hate Fallout 3 from day one are staying true to themselves ? Hell, at least they show some kind of consistency.

I think people need to relax. We’re still 10 days from release and there will be a lot of reviews out before then (if there is a review embargo, it doesn’t appear to be day of release). Desslock will have his review, Tom Chick will probably have one, and KD over at GT says he has the game and will have a review up before release. So unless you think everyone in the review business are corrupt shills, you will get some reasonable opinions before you spend a dime. There’s no reason to get your panties in a bunch because a French magazine that has hated the idea from day one says they don’t like it.

I don’t think the justification for Foxtab’s inanity is quite as glamorous as him being the son of the ultimate catass and siamese/bearded lady triplets.
EDIT: Or his drug problem, either.
Just read the Xbox mag review they gave it a 10.
Whats it actually like? I’ve heard nothing but bad things about it but over the past month I’ve actually seen whose been complaining about it, and well lets just say I’m back in neutral territory.
Does it have any of the roleplaying/conversation elements in fallout1/2? Either way for the price its at at GoG I might just have to see for myself.

I thought Fallout Tactics actually got decently good reviews when it came out. I played the demo back in the day, and it was a good game. It is no Fallout 1/2, but I don’t think it was trying to be.

FOT is mainly a squad tactical game set in the Fallout universe, but in a different place than any of the RPG’s. However, it incorporates a number of the early RPG character development elements. The RPG/conversation elements are very minimal. You play a series of missions, and while you can occasionally do them in the order of your choice, that’s about the most choice you have. Many of the mission maps are built around moving through them in a particular order.
The game has other flaws as well. Unlike the RPG’s, the weapon type choices are not all valid through the whole game. For example, small arms are very usefull in the first part of the game, but are pretty much worthless late. While the main character you create receives enough experience to adopt some other skill later, the NPC’s that make up your squad don’t. In other words, the game forces you to drop and add squad members as you go and as the enemies ramp up and require you to adopt different weapon skills.
Also, the combat system allows you to choose either turn-based or real time. While this would seem to be a great compromise, the game is really oriented towards real time. If you play turn-based, you can complete the game, but later missions can become epic in length under that combat system. You can switch back and forth, however.
Despite all of that, the game does a decent job of capturing the Fallout setting, albeit with a number of examples of particularly crude humor. If you like the RPG’s because of the combat, it brings back a lot of memories and looks much better graphically. Just keep in mind that you will be forced along sometimes illogical paths.
Tactics was pretty fun, but I’d rather replay Jagged Alliance 2 or Silent Storm.
edit: And Sarkus, that weapon problem is the same as the other games, or at least the second. Small guns were completely useless at the end of the game.
