It’s all so silly, anyways. Can anyone ever actually FEEL when a game is one point away from a ten? What if they’d improved it beyond even what you considered was a ten? How would that register, mentally?

Ha ha! Which is why putting too much stock in somewhat arbitrarily assigned numbers is dumb to begin with.

Yeah, I like Tom’s, “go buy it, you asshole!” / “steer clear” system.

That’s not correct - you are definitely funneled underground at certain points in D.C. – and there are a lot of barriers within the city that prevent above ground passage, at least directly. I didn’t mind that, however - it actually reminded me of the description of post-apocalyptic LUD in Stephen King’s Dark Tower series - and the rest of the game is completely open, so it’s an interesting contrast.

No, that’s not even close to possible - there’s a lot of perks. There are definitely legitimate character choices, although there’s a couple of design decisions I disagree with which weaken the distinctiveness of characters (the ability to take a perk that improves an attribute point, 10 times), and the existence of equipment that improves your skills which somewhat weakens the importance of those development choices.

Stealthing around or using a pistol in massive Power Armor just destroys that image.

Well, you could do that in the other games too. Power Armor is still badass, but there are other Armor alternatives (including a metal armor you get for a pretty cool quest that’s arguably better than any Power Armor).

I’ve never read an issue of OXM, and don’t know that reviewer, but I do know the review was of the released version of the software, which was going through the certification process at the time of the review, which takes time.

I also don’t like reviews at company offices, and refused to do the PCG review under those circumstances, for what it’s worth.

No, you can’t. On the other hand, they’re more interesting (and harder) than the minigames in Oblivion. There’s nothing goofy like the Conversation minigame in Oblivion.

Bleedthefreak - I think the games are easier based upon higher skill, but definitely the main effect of the science and lockpicking skills are to give you the ability to attempt the games, since you’re likely to (eventually) succeed regardless of skill level once you have access - and the key threshold skill levels are quarterly (25,50,75,100) and you have to have at least that skill level to attempt the task.

I read that series and I generally liked it. Is it normally thought of as a good or bad series? The writing is middling to fair, but the story is well played and felt fairly engaging. So I guess I’m asking what your opinion of it was.

Ah, I get it. That’s good to know then, it’s important the skills have meaning.

The other comments you answered sounded good as well. I’d agree that having an item bolster your skills does sort of negate the level-up/building process, but didn’t lock-picks and the like do that in FO 1/2? Or maybe I’m remembering wrong. It’s also too bad you can bump up your attributes as much as you want with perks, but then again if there are a sizeable amount of desireable perks, it’s just another fun choice to have to make, right?

I agree, but unless you intend to base your buying decision on OXM’s review, I don’t think it matters in this case. Desslock, as he has said, is not reviewing the game under those circumstances. Other reviewers who are playing the game right now have actual copies. So there will be plenty of opinions that won’t suffer from the problem.

Yeah, you’re right and I fully admitted that I was being a red ass about it only because I’m irritated with OXM’s crappy review of Dead Space. I think that review missed the boat so badly that I’m holding a grudge against OXM for a while.

Understandable. I don’t have my OXM with me, but you could always note the reviewer’s name and keep your eyes out for other reivews he writes. It might be he just doesn’t like “scary” games or something. Who knows? I assume it was a different reviewer than wrote the FO3 review though? Maybe not.

Yeah, the reviewer on Dead Space was Meghan Watt, the new Editorial Intern at OXM. Regardless of her particular preferences, I think she missed the point by a lot in her Dead Space review. I’m loathe to do this, but what the hell? Her 6.5 review is the lowest on Metacritic. That isn’t really the point though. Eurogamer gave the game a 7.0, and while I didn’t agree with that particular review, I don’t feel like the reviewer messed the review up. I think Ms. Watt, on the other hand, screwed the pooch bigtime.

Paul Curthoys, an Executive Editor at OXM, reviewed Fallout 3.

I got the impression Paul was really happy with FO3, but I also get the impression he wasn’t familiar with FO 1/2. I’m pretty sure FO3 will be a great game, but I’m most interested in the opinions of folks who enjoyed the original titles.

And it sounds like maybe Dead Space wasn’t really a game for Meghan, though I didn’t read the DS review from OXM yet. Do you feel she didn’t play the game enough to give it a fair shake, that she was overly harsh on an otherwise excellent title, or that maybe she was just not understanding what the game was trying to convey? Just curious, I’ll read the review tonight, now you’ve got me interested.

can someone promise me that when the game is released, there will be a new thread instead of just continuing unto this one?

Er, sure. I promise.

Mr. Curthoys’ review of Fallout 3 is pretty comprehensive, but it reads more like a preview in that it sort of lays out all the features and doesn’t get particularly critical of anything. I think that has a lot to do with the fact that he loved the game and didn’t have a lot bad to say about it. The review has a sidebar in which OXM states that, as a staff, they’re clueless about Fallout 1 and 2. Embarrassing? Yes. Relevance to the Fallout 3 review? Very little really.

As for Meghan Watts’ Dead Space review, I hate to take up more space in this thread talking about it. I’ll simply reference you to my particular criticisms of her review that are in one of the Dead Space threads here at Qt3.

no

even if there is was an apocalypse, this thread would survive it

and Draikin would too

You could just create a new topic called ‘The Fallout 3 “I’ve actually played it” thread’ or something.
