Wow, they really are connoisseurs of that great Fallout humor they love so much.
Will the little guy ever be allowed to actually use the lunchbox though? :)
I love the lunchbox. It’s a lot bigger than I expected. I kinda want to use it!

Damn. Does the sawed-off shotgun seem like the most useless weapon in the world to anyone else? Stupid thing only lets me shoot it a single time in VATS, and seems to do roughly comparable damage to a 10mm pistol. And that’s even at pretty close range.
Here I was getting all excited when I bought one, now I find myself swapping it out for almost every fight.
Is your hand on the pump? Try putting your Left hand on a forty, as well.

Its terrible out in the open but indoors? Fun stuff. I was clearing out a super market type place and this guy came around the corner and surprised me. VATS mode, 1 shot to the torso and it put a hole in him that a small dog could have jumped through. I have been going to the pipboy to swap weps, but you can hotkey them to the D-pad I think.
The lunchbox is awesome :)
Following the links to NMA was a mistake. I read one post by a guy who was trying his best to be reasonable and present an alternative view. Following this reasonable post was post after post of people calling the reasonable a troll. My eyes were on the brink of bleeding and I closed the tab.
I got about two hours more with Fallout 3 last night. I’m feeling more comfortable with the game now. I’ve completed a couple of side quests, including one that involved the slaying of a bunch of Raiders inside a building. I’m definitely feeling much more comfortable with the combat. I’m also obsessively looting everything, which is tough as my character can carry 200 pounds max. I’m sure it’s something that everyone realized already, but I did not notice that as I was “trading” stuff in at the General Goods store in Megaton, I was getting zero bottlecaps. Obviously I should’ve been selecting the stuff I wanted first and then trading the amount needed to obtain it, but I have to admit that I’ve given stuff away. NEVER AGAIN!
I’m struck by just how complete the world feels. I mean, it’s just so visually striking to walk through the Wasteland. A lot more interesting than grass up to my chest and the occasional Aelid (sp?) ruins. I can’t wait to really dig into it this weekend. Playing this game for two hours feels like 10 minutes.
I’m actually curious to see NMA’s review, probably after I’ve played the game for a bit, and not in a train-wreck kind of way. I’d just like to calmly read the perspective from that site. I take it they didn’t get any review copies??
It does much better damage than the 10mm pistol, actually, at equivalent repair levels. Are you sure that your shotgun isn’t just in bad condition? The max level to which I can currently repair stuff is 50-60%; at that level, the pistol does 10 damage and the sawed-off shotgun does 26. The shotgun has a short effective range, but it’s one of the higher-damage Small Arms weapons I’ve found. Only two shots in the sawed-off, though, so it’s best saved for when enemies rush you and get in close.
The combat shotgun is even better, damage-wise, though. And it holds 10 rounds.
I picked up a shotgun (can’t recall if combat or sawed off) that was in wretched condition last night and it was still noticeably more powerful than my 10mm pistol. I believe it was rated at 29 damage even though it was on its last leg condition wise.
They’re outsourcing it to this guy.
Wow, a whole developer forum full of NMA rejects!
Why in God’s name do I keep clicking the NMA links?! I’m an idiot!
I found this quote to be especially good and indicative of the fact that the “reviewer” has an (unsurprising) agenda of extreme prejudice against the game:
Really Nutter (and no disrespect to David Nutter, who is awesome)? I’m unsure how someone that calls a what, 8 question exam “painfully long” ever made it through the first cave in Fallout 2. It’s a small statement from the ridiculous diatribe, but I think it really goes to the heart of how batshit insane these people are.

He’s got a point about the combat though. Running around the Vault in a spandex suit hefting a baseball bat you can easily defeat armored cops with guns by rushing through their gunfire and beating them to a bloody pulp.
Seriously, that was weak. Once you leave the vault combat improves and you need to actually think a bit about what you’re doing but as a first impression of the combat it was pretty awful.

I was hoping to keep the baseball bat without me as my primary weapon throughout the game.
Is there no hard mode or difficulty slider?
There’s a hard mode and a very hard mode, even.
