Bug. It happened once in a very easy, one shot, one kill combat. Again, no status effects: low Rads, no limbs missing, not encumbered, light armor, etc., etc.
NMA’s worst fears have proven true: Great game is great, sells accordingly.

I don’t think NMA ever doubted Fallout 3 would sell. They’ll just say “populist crap* sells well, sky remains dark as night proceeds” (w/ apologies to Saunders for stealing his line)…
New fans of the series are even filtering in to change the make up of NMA, some older fans of the series have been accepting of most of the changes, too.
*Not my opinion, don’t hurt me!

Maybe it’s a gravity affecting power of the enemy, so you… okay, nevermind. Sounds like a bug.

Are you accidentally hitting the walk/run key in the fury of combat. I had the same thing happening to me, and then realized that every once in awhile I was hitting the walk/run key. Since I was “running” all of the time, that there me back into Bethesda’s slow as molasses walking speed. Seriously, I’d love a mod so that running seemed like running, or at least a third speed :)
There needs to be a mod that adds sprinting that uses AP, and also nightvision or at least a flashlight you can aim ahead of you instead of at your feet.

And binoculars thought the sniper rifle does in a pinch I guess.

Me too. After 10 hours or play, it locks my system on every load. After trying everything I can think of, I’m now waiting for a patch.
Not most, but quite a few people - just read this very thread! Also note that they held the patch back to fix other problems. There is conflicting information on what the patch will do.
I haven’t found a direct link between fire and crashing, but only launching the game to play a fresher game with only a few hours played made it more stable. If I load the other character with more time played, I get frequent crashes on either character.

Well the patch is out and the notes say:
Bug Fixes
Fixed occasional crashes when exiting the game or using Alt F4 to exit.
Fixed crashes when using Alt-Tab while binks or credits were playing.
The game now restarts properly after title updates finish installing.
I tried the patch and it definitely fixed the crash when exit glitch, when you exit without going to the main menu first.
Only thing I find annoying about the patch is that it starts up the game after it’s applied. Since I was doing other things (perhaps I shouldn’t have been) it was rather annoying. Ah well. If the patch didn’t need the game to start up, I don’t know why they bothered to have it do that (it bypassed the pre-start launch window, too).
Since I should post in a legendary thread before it finally goes out with a whimper: This game is awesome.
That’s, well not ha ha funny but funny none the less. Does the actual exe. still bypass the disk check (also starts up a heck of alot faster)? I remember one of the moderators on the official boards saying it was likely they’d close that security hole in a soon-to-be patch, though I’m a bit skeptical.
Its nice to see a company so laid back on DRM.
Edit: It still has no DRM, tested with the drive open.
Indeed. Fallout 3 seems to have two speeds - walking, and crawling with two broken legs. Actual “running” would sure be nice. Especially since they made the speed of movement an issue for stealth until you can take the Silent Running perk and I can’t fucking tolerate spending any real time at legs-broken speed.
Having problems with the patch for the Steam version, if I wish to play my saves I need to log into Live, when i did so it downloaded patch, which then hung and crashed PC. I rebooted and it did the same, the next reboot has it giving me an error message saying error in patch and tells me to go to gamesforwindows.com/support, which has like 3 paragraphs of text and is as much use as a chocolate fireguard.
I can’t patch it manually with the exe from bethesda, and now when I hit Live in the menu it wont even bring up the Live overlaygui so i’m completley stuck

I think your only option is going to be deleting the game and having Steam re-download.
Hmm I suspected that, and backed up the downloaded files via the Steam backup function. I hope that works, but wanted to see if anyone else had the same problem and had a solution.
Thanks.

Doesn’t the Steam “backup” function back up the GAME? Your save files are just sitting in your My Documents\Games\Fallout 3 folder. Your saved games shouldn’t be erased when you delete the game out of Steam.
Have you tried the “verify integrity of game files” option from the game’s properties? That’s fixed up a few games for me where the files got damaged.
