The sewers were not great either. The game suffered from a distinct lack of planning for non-combat archetypes.
Not being able to reduce them to giblets kinda sucks. :(
If Oblivion is any indication there will be almost-zero new information until the game is almost out and then there will be a few official videos (E3 maybe only behind closed doors) and that’s it until the game gets reviewed on X-Play or the like.

For the PC though this is where the gems are coming from. Ignore the first release, and if it gets a sequel it generally means that not only will the game be fun, but it’ll probably be closer to the original version with less of the bugs, being a 1.5 release more than a sequel.
The sewers in Bloodlines… ugh. The sad part is the game up to that point really is just unbelievably cool.
I was thinking of checking out Arcanum. Is it worth playing, at least? It went on the pile of games I really wanted to play, but I was in college and studying fricking math so I had to study all the time.
It’s a pretty big pile.

Use fanpatch, give it a few hours. If the writing/setting/atmosphere hasnt sucked you in, forget the game.
Arcanum features a terrible real-time/turn-based dual wielding hybrid bastard of a combat system. You can probably plow through it with minimum pain by rolling a melee Half-Ogre.
Just be sure to use the right fanpatch. There are two main ones, one that is focused on fixing the actual released game and one that did some of that but now throws a bunch of new/extra stuff in there with arguable results. The more modded one is still being tweaked, however IIRC the wacko who was doing the “pure” patch quit the internets forever after dropping a giant drama bomb for some reason nobody cares about.
Yeah. They were working with a different publisher every time, too. I’m not completely incapable of believing that all three were terrible burdens on Troika’s native brilliance, etc, but it seems increasingly unlikely with each additional one.
My solution was to roll a gnomish Ladies Man. After I scarred my face while kicking a rat in the first area (no, really…permanent Beauty damage from an unarmed critical miss), from that point forward my only task in combat was snapping my fingers to signal Sogg, Virgil, Gar, and Dog to kill the shit out of anything nearby.
The game really should have let you enter a name for the dog, incidentally.
Good lord. That sounds fantastic!
Back to F3, I pre-ordered it at Amazon. Kind of snuck up on me.
What do you mean? Does it even have a firm release date yet?
October seems to be the month all the retailers are listing it as since they announced the collector’s edition details.

Frankly, I thought every main mission in Bloodlines was total ass, except perhaps the first one which had atmosphere galore but without being a pain to play. The mission afterwards in the mad house was just tedious, and then came the sewers which were even worse.
All the side-quest stuff though was absolutely amazing.

replaying the ghost house is amazing, you basically can’t die but remember how scared you were?
The best thing that I remember about it was looking down one hallway in the basement and seeing the little ghost girl blur by. It definitely established an excellent atmosphere.
If I recall correctly, it really broke it at the end with the ectoplasmic spooge. I expected to see a stagehand shaking the walls and someone hooting, ‘oooh-wooo, ghoo-ost!’
The part that scared me the most was opening a dryer that was banging around or something. I remember thinking “this is going to mean my back is not to the wall . . . now either there is going to be something in the dryer, or worse yet, NOTHING in the dryer and when I turn around, feeling all safe from the dryer, BAM!”
That was a freaky level.
Yeah, that dryer bit was pretty good …
