While various statements have said that you can talk yourself out of some or even many situations, there have also been statements that the game is not going to support the non-violent approach that Draikin is talking about. Fallout 1 did completely and Fallout 2 came pretty close. I’d be surprised if you can even come close in Fallout 3.

Again, it’s not something that personally bothers me, but it was something that was appealing about the previous games - the large number of ways you could beat the game, from the various weapons focus choices (all of which were legitimate) to the stealth approach to the diplomatic approach.

So, what, it’s all or none? Sheesh.

I guess Sarkus is the kind of person who takes the Weekly World News to heart.

My own bias against that sort of thing probably plays a part in my dislike but keeping in that Western theme that the previous games had your character should always be moving. Drifting across the high plains of the wastes, at least that’s my feeling. :-)

No, Pete the PR guy has specifically said in interviews that you cannot beat the game without killing.

As I keep saying, I don’t personally care. But it was a part of the earlier Fallout games that made them unique. I can understand some people who are not Fallout luddites on other issues being unhappy that Bethesda is not going to support that approach in Fallout 3.

You should probably say earlier game, since that wasn’t the case in 2.

I also don’t think “Bethesda is not going to support that approach” is very accurate when they are reportedly going lengths to, just not to 100%. We’ll see whether it’s 99% or 15% when it’s released and we play through it.

As long as the final boss fight isn’t v. a helicopter/vertibird. D-:

coolest bit of Fallout advertising I’ve seen so far:

Ah, but what if you can set an explosive in it before it takes off/shout and convince the pilots that their lives are meaningless and they’re living in a dying world which causes them to jump out and commit suicide/rig it with your science skill before it takes off/sneak onto it before it takes off?

That was supposed to be a joke, but a designer could probably make most any situation interesting if they were really creative with the skillset.

…And lots and lots of man-hours to make it not buggy or half-assed. But a man can dream.

You have to admit, being able to talk the big bad into killing himself in Fallout 1 is pretty damn cool. Or sneaking and nuking him. Or shooting up on drugs, whipping out a minigun and power armor, and charging down the hallway as your brain melts.

You also have to admit that Bethesda’s previous games generally didn’t offer you much in the way of options, which can make some people a bit worried, myself included. Saying “What! You can’t ask for violence and peace both, that’s crazy talk!” is a pretty weak argument. There’s just too much anger on both sides of the game’s fence for some reason. One side needs to see that the game could be enjoyable to some people even if it just gives you the option to kick the door down, and the other side needs to see why some people could get upset over that, even IF kicking the door down is a really good time.

Can’t we all just get along, like super mutants and humans in Broken Hills? Oh, wait, this is BETHE$DA SUPER MUTANTS MORE LIKE ORCS TODD HOWARD QUOTE SAYING YOU CAN’T TALK WITH SUPER MUTANTS RAAAAAAAAAGHAGHGHGHGHGHghghgh

PS: I hope you realized that was a joke.
PPS: I just have to say it was a joke because this thread is giving everyone a case of space madness, you see.

Sweet Jesus.

PEACE BE DAMNED, THEY’RE CRAZIES! CRAZIES!

Edit: Though on second thought, Bethesda is America and “The fans” are Nazi Germany in that, so maybe it’s a peace offering to Bethesda. A weird, weird peace offering.

LOL I like how Vault Boy stabs himself in the eye with the pen after you hit submit.

That’s actually really well made. I just feel bad for whoever spent as much time as that would take on it.

And it’s pretty creepy, whoever’s side it’s on.

hands-on reports:
IGN: “In fact, Fallout 3 is very much Oblivion in a post-apocalyptic world. So if you didn’t like that game, or the series for that matter, then ignore everything I’ve said thus far and go read something else.”
X360 world: “Fallout 3 is a true Fallout game, with all the wit, character and themes of the old games: more than that, Fallout 3 is Oblivion 2. Even with the post-apocalyptic trappings it feels like Oblivion - same engine, controls, freedom, and sense of place.”

I’d like all the people who told me to give Bethesda the benefit of the doubt to admit they were wrong and that Bethesda lied again: they never intended to make a sequel.

You are just all sorts of insane, aren’t you Draikin?

You can quote “Fallout 3 is a true Fallout game, with all the wit, character and themes of the old games” and totally ignore it for anything mentioning Oblivion, going on the attack.

OH MY GOD THEY ONLY EVER INTENDED TO MAKE POST APOCOLYPSE OBLIVION YOU GUYS.

Honestly, that’s the most low-key crazy ridiculous sentence I’ve seen in a year, and I congratulate you on it.

How can you say “Bethesda lied again” when you quoted the XB360 article as saying “Fallout 3 is a true Fallout game, with all the wit, character and themes of the old games.”? The fact that it also has elements of Oblivion should not be a shock or disqualifier.

You should admit you never have and never will accept a Fallout game made by Bethesda. You’ve never accepted that a Fallout game could be made using the Oblivion engine, thus Fallout 3 will never work.

To be fair, you kinda did the same on his first quote, which basically DOES say it’s post-apocalyptic Oblivion and if you didn’t like Oblivion you shouldn’t bother.

Unless IGN later mentions it being much like the originals and he failed to mention that part, but I’m too lazy to check.

Was this posted? New Ign preview + new screenshots:

Sure, but that’s specific to the game engine. In other words, if you don’t like the action FP RPG mechanics that are Oblivion, you won’t like Fallout 3. Well gee, what a shock.

The question is and has always been whether they deliver the setting (mood, humor, etc.). The IGN quote doesn’t say anything about that and the other one specifically says it has those things.

So… how much for the Brahmin armor? (I keed)

Why are you guys even wasting time with Draikin? He’s a troll, and a not too subtle one at that, with the IQ of a carrot.
