New PSY video: Gentleman

PSY = The new king of one hit wonders.

A few years from now people will wonder what the fuss was all about…

hur hur oklahoma joke funnies

The plethora of “reaction” videos to this single is the most mystifying and infuriating figment of internet culture I’ve seen in 12-16 hours. What in the fucking hell, people?

“OMG he just did a thing! Oh, and another! Haha this is a music video that I am watching!”

More concerning is that one of them–from “kpopsteve” (so I suppose we can’t question his credentials here)–has 300,000 views.

Do 300,000 people literally have nothing better to do than watch another person react to (not even review or critique!) 3 minutes of light comedy and drum machine kicks?

All this coming from a guy who actually rather liked the thing.

Still got nothing on SHINEE tho, bitchezzzzz

I wonder now.

Do 300,000 people literally have nothing better to do than watch another person react to (not even review or critique!) 3 minutes of light comedy and drum machine kicks?

I think a lot of people “waste time” on youtube, just wandering around and seeing the latest viral hit. I don’t think it’s that much worse than writing on a videogames forum.

That vid seems pretty flat and uninspired to me. And it’s missing by far the best thing about Gangnam Style.

Geez, tough room. Love the song and I thought the video was cute. Psy is awesome.

They really aren’t jokes so long as people like you keep making them accurate transcriptions of reality. In a way, he’s letting you off light, because it’s essentially saying “He never had a chance, he lives among savages” rather than “He has every reason to know better and thus bears full responsibility.”

No, Pelvic Thrust Guy is in there.

I thought it was a pretty clear case of playing a character for the video, who was a misogynist and all-around unlikable tool. Just as how in Gangnam Style he was playing a character of a guy who aspires to the high life but can only afford pathetic substitutes.

Agreed. This thread reeks a bit of Hipsterism, a scent which, if I had to bottle, would be a mix of new-car leather and menthol cigarettes. Maybe a touch of vanilla car freshener.

Oh, I don’t know. This seems like “less of the same.” Leaving aside comparisons, if Gangnam Style didn’t exist, I would still find Gentleman forgettable. It’s not terrible, but it’s not really all that interesting either.

The comparison that comes to mind is Weird Al, only he’s handicapped here in that I have no idea what he’s singing outside of the refrain, so he’s left with the physical / visual humor. Which was more than enough to carry Gangnam Style, even beyond the novelty. Gangnam style is fun to watch a second time because of all the silliness and self-deprecation, whereas much of what’s in Gentleman is funny-once at best (i.e. getting catapulted into the pool).

Also, mmm, vanilla.
