How is it? I am really tempted to buy it, but I dont have enough points at the moment. Is it worth running out for a point card to buy?

For Lode Runner? How much have they changed/added to it? You can play the original on emulators for free you know. :)

Son of a…

Apparently Load Runner has gone up to 1200 points. Bah!

XBLA games have gone up quite a bit since the days where Geometry Wars was $5. Now it seems the norm is $10, with $15 and $20 games sprinkled in fairly liberally. I haven’t tried Lode Runner, but just in the abstract, it seems more like a $10 game than a $15 game.

Yeah, that’s all true, but LR was 800 points this morning.

OH! I didn’t realize that. HA HA! Craziness.

“Hey, this game is popular!”

“…”

“Price hike!”

I got lucky and picked it up this morning for 800 points. I would probably pay 1200 but I’m not going to complain.

Major Nelson has a great explanation for the price increase:

Was on board whole-heartedly for 1200 but since the pricing error I’ll probably just wait until it goes back to 800. Got plenty of other stuff to play and I imagine someday it’ll go on sale for 800 and I’ll pick it up then.

Unless the original graphics is available as an option… Then I’ll probably succumb.

It had been previously announced at 1200 points, so it is an honest error. Does still dampen my enthusiasm a bit after seeing the earlier 800 point announcement in my RSS feed, though.

1200 is the new 800. Apparently the fees have gone up to put games on XBLA so the publishers of these games have to charge more to make any money on them.

Yeah, I had no problem with 1200, but knowing I could’ve gotten it at 800 and didn’t, while not a negative on the game nor Microsoft, nonetheless dampens my enthusiasm (as you said). Enough that I’ll just enjoy the demo and play other stuff.

At 800 the game would probably have done great.
At 1200 the game would probably do “ok”.
At 1200 announced, 800 release the game would’ve done gangbusters.
At 1200 announced, 800 release, adjusted to 1200 it’ll do worse than any of the above options. Oh well. =/

That explains my confusion this mornnig. While at work and away from my 360, I went to purchase LR on xbox.com knowing it would be 1200 and was surprised to see 800. It jumped back up to 1200 during my attempt to purchase and then xbox.com cut short the transaction, telling me to go home and do the transaction on my 360.

I’m gonna give the demo a shot. It might convince me to spend $15, but I kind of doubt it. I loved Lode Runner on the Apple IIe back in elementary school, but that was as an alternative to, ya know, school work. I have a lot of other stuff to do at home.

For me Lode Runner (hopefully) represents one of the very few mp-side-by-side games I can play with my daughter. I’m actually still kind of shocked that out of all the great titles I’ve picked up so far – many apparently aimed at kids and families – only Castle Crashers really delivers (the board games don’t count because we play them less). (Edit: I’m still excited to play single-player though).

I hope they kept the egg-shaped fade (or did something similarly cool).

Lode Runner. That, Dark Castle, and the other games available on the mac back in the day had me convinced for a long time that I would never really be interested in videogames.

My favorite Lode Runner experience was on the NES. My friend and I would take turn designing levels for each other to play. Brutal, unfair levels (you need to dig through eight layers of brick, and do it in exactly the right spot to hit the hidden fall-through brick on the bottom level). Often accidentally impossible levels.

Wonderful memories, but artifacts of a simpler, more boring era when it was either that or goddamn World 1-1 again. I bought the Sierra mid-90s remake and played it twice; I suspect the XBLA version would get the same treatment.

This sums up my feelings as well. I just don’t see how Lode Runner is going to keep me interested these days. Is it massively souped up or something? I’m going to need something beyond bloom.
