The Perfect Dark trial got to me. I bought it almost half way through the first level. They really cleaned up this game so much. It feels so much better to play than the N64 version! Amazing what a difference a good frame rate makes. I can’t get used to aiming manually though. I used to aim manually all the time in Goldeneye and Perfect Dark, but the whole “move the cursor on the screen thing” is going to take some getting used to.

I thought the left trigger was just zoom aiming. You should be able to aim just fine with the right stick.

I’m probably going to pick up Perfect Dark since I loved these games (PD and Goldeneye) back in their time. I’m glad to hear they did a great job with this one.

Were there any more modern games that had a similar style in the single player as the Rare FPS’s? That is, there are various objectives that need to be completed to pass a level, and higher difficulty levels add more objectives. I imagine the Timesplitters games were probably set up in a similar way. Anything else? I really enjoyed that design, but can’t remember any other games that aped it, which is surprising considering how many copies they sold.

Thief had this. It came out in 1998.

I think Thief 2 also had added objectives on higher difficulties. It came out around the same time as PD I believe.

I read in an interview with someone at Looking Glass that they got that idea from Goldeneye. Sadly I can’t think of any other games to do it after Thief 2. I don’t think even Timesplitters does it, actually.

Wow. I need to stock up on Live points right quick. Based on the demo, Perfect Dark is easily the game I’ve been waiting for all decade, though I didn’t realize it until now.

It’s just like I remember, except so much cleaner. The graphics are crisp now, the sound is beefier, and it’s so much faster.

The only problem is, my mind is still set on the old controls, so I’m taking more fire than I’d like trying to figure out what they’ve remapped certain things to. For instance, didn’t crouch used to be righter-shoulder-button + yellow-down-arrow? Now it’s toggled by the left stick, I believe… And I still haven’t quite gotten used to switching weapons. If only I could hook up an N64 controller.

Otherwise, the controls are quite good. I just need to relearn them, which would probably be easier if I hadn’t cumulatively spent days in the combat simulator back in 2000-2002.

I can’t wait to go back to the Grid with slow-motion turned on and throw a laptop gun against the wall, and just watch it tear through the bots.

I was wondering why there wasn’t more talk about Scrap Metal. I guess now I know :/ 4/10 for … well, sounds like for everything, really. Crappy balance, meaningless upgrades, boring bosses, weak and unsatisfying guns.

Scrap Metal’s a hoot in multiplayer, though. My kid and I have been playing it – the destruction derby’s fun.

Ditto. Bought it last night and am now hoping there’s some way they can give Goldeneye the same treatment. I wish there were more games updated this way – sharpen up the graphics and sound and leave everything else just the way it was. Can anyone get this crew working on an X-Com restoration?

They did, it exists, and they’re not allowed to release it due to some kind of licensing kerfuffle. (Edit: Actually, I’m not sure how far through development it got, but there were screenshots of it at least.)

I figured licensing issues would prevent that from ever happening. Crap.

Dude, the Timesplitters games totally did that! I can pretty much guarantee that everything in Goldeneye and PD that was great is in the Timesplitters games, and then some.

Timesplitters: Future Perfect is the most fun I have ever had in an FPS. Especially playing as the amazing Hans. Or the gingerbread man. WHERE IS TIMESPLITTERS 4?!

I wonder when Ancient Trader will get released? I’m half-tempted to buy the pc version now if it’ll be a few months.

And Doom II is out today on XBLA! (800 points)

I’m not sure if I’ll bother since I’ve picked up the id collection on Steam since then, but the XBLA version of the original Doom was quite enjoyable. Even if episode 4 was ball-bustingly difficult…

I already own Doom II on PC, but I’m tempted to pick up the XBLA release as it contains an additional chapter with nine brand new levels.
