Next up for InXile ... Autoduel?

Looks like the folks at RPGCodex turned up a trademark filing for Inxile:

Brian Fargo’s Twitter, in response says “Once again the Codex is first on the scene …” Sounds like a pretty strong possibility here, and I for one would jump at the chance to Kickstart that one. Vehicular combat, on the open road and arena? Courier missions across blasted wastelands, with the occasional pitstop at the casinos to muster up some cash? Oh yes please.

WHAT!?!?!

I LOVE AUTODUEL! I FEAR I HAVE TO USE CAPS ALL THE WAY THROUGH IN THIS POST! I PLAYED AUTODUEL WAY TO MUCH AS A KID, AND AUTODUEL AS A C64 GAME WAS THE BOMB! LOVE IT!

I am intrigued too, but I missed caps lock day by a bit :(

Sorry about that - I got a bit excited :-)

I hope it’s faster and looks better than this one:

Which I assume is the old one you all love?

aye - It was the openworld of the time I think :-)

One expects that the new Autoduel will be an exact recreation of the original, pixel by pixel and byte by byte.

MY. God.

Me likee.

I didn’t think InXile was into making Action Role Playing Games. From what I’ve seen of Wasteland 2 and Torment, they’re more comfortable with wandering pedestrians than angry drivers. I wonder if this will be more like the Car Wars games that Steve Jackson is still putting out, or like the recent Mad Max game? Or like the Loose Cannon game that Digital Anvil never released?

That Let’s Play that Pod posted of the original CRPG looks boring though. Gameplay (outside of kitting out your knockoff v8 interceptor) is driving head-on into another car and shooting until it dies? No thanks.

I am curious about that. If we take as a given that Inxile is going to work on an updated Autoduel, what will it look like? I imagine they’re probably not going to go into a sim-like experience, like an Interstate 76 or something like that. But it’s hard to imagine it being a turn-based strategic game like Wasteland 2, then you’re giving up the speed and feel of driving a car and shooting at other cars. Maybe they’ll partner with somebody who has experience in the driving arena to make it a little more action-y?

Autoduel and Interstate 76 are eagerly awaiting worthwhile remakes/updates for me.

I never played Autoduel, but the Steve Jackson Car Wars games and Autoduel Champions were much loved by my gaming group. I’d be very happy with a turn-based RPG that had the feel of those games.

I was sure that Autoduel WAS the pc edition of Car Wars? I played that a ton as well. I do remember enjoying Roadwar 2000 and Roadwar 2000 Europe as well, which had features a bit like both games.

I hope not. You can still preserve a feeling of speed in turn-based gameplay, and the result is a lot more tactically interesting.

Man, I got good at those Amateur Night events. The enemies always spawned in the same pattern, so there was a perfect path through the level. I could predict when one was about to come on screen, so I could start shooting and take them out just before they became visible. I’d build up enough cash for a perfect battle van, then hit the road and get torn apart by road trash.

I preferred to build up a small, fast, high armor vehicle with good tires and no weapons. Then do courrier missions until I could roll out something big and nasty. I wound up loving flamethrowers in the game (I got to a point where the salvage reduction was irrelevant), so typically it was a front mounted laser with a rear mounted flamethrower and lots of armor.

That screen was the Atari ST version I think–significantly prettier than the Apple and C64 versions. Too bad it broke under TOS 1.02.

I played Autoduel on my C-64 and fucking loved it. Can’t wait for this one.
