Of course they didn’t actually need to be the 7th seed to make it, it turns out.

No. The Niners were guaranteed to be in the playoffs if they won their Week 18 game. And they could back-door get in if New Orleans lost. (New Orleans won, but so did SF).

According to Next Gen Stats, the 49ers had just a 0.4% chance of winning after punting with 1:57 remaining in the game. In order to come back and win, the 49ers had to:

• Force a three-and-out
• Score a TD without any timeouts
• Prevent the Rams from scoring in regulation
• Win in OT

0.4% represents the lowest minimum win probability of any team to eventually win a game in the NGS era (ie 2016+), including the famous Miami Miracle (0.7%) and Super Bowl LI (NE 0.8%).

That was a massive risk, especially without reminding everyone they have to get the ball to the official

For all the complaining after the game that the Cowboys did about the ref not getting the ball spotted faster, Dak is the one who blew it by handing the ball to the center instead of running to the ref and handing him the ball. Rewound that play about 5 times to see exactly what happened and I’m convinced they would have had a couple of seconds if he’d just gotten the ball in the ref’s hands immediately instead of forcing the official to push his way through the linemen then pick the ball up and then spot it.

IMHO, they could have taken 2 shots at the end-zone with the time (14s) and distance (41yrs) they had. It was a dumb play to run up the middle with no timeouts and only 14 sec left. Cowboys should only blame themselves.

Cowboy fans are just being jerks. How many pre-snap penalties did the Cowboys have? How many total penalties, for how many yards? Dropped passes, bad passes, no passes–they were just pathetic the entire game. The only reason they were in it at all is that the 49ers didn’t play much better. The whole game was like taking the Eagles performance and matching it up against the Steelers performance.

There was a lot of pathetic football this weekend. But the Bills looked scary good.
