Saw a half-page ad in a local weekly paper for this:
http://www.nintendogamecube.com/cubeclub/
Unfortunately it was an old issue of the paper, and the event had passed, so I couldn’t go. Anyone see this? Supposedly there were DJs spinning tunes and a bunch of Gamecubes and Gameboy Advances set up in abandoned retail spaces in several US cities, to promote Gamecube. Event sponsors included Maxim and Mad Magazine.
What the hey?
Last year’s club was pretty neat because you could get your hands on some Gamecube games before the console was even released (for those of us not cool enough to be at E3). I went with a few friends and we had a good time with the party games (Smash Brothers and Monkey Ball), and got in some time with Rogue Leader, Eternal Darkness, and StarFox, all on some nice Panasonic HDTVs. They also had a couple of small rooms in the back with surround sound setups.
They didn’t come around this way the last time, though. I think they had Metroid and maybe even the E3 demo of Zelda, which would have been nice.
Yeah, it was unfortunate, but there was no stop on the tour in Philadelphia. Otherwise, I would have made the trek.

I was in San Francisco a couple weeks back with my brother and we ran across a HUGE Gamecube place right down on the pier. It was like an old-style arcade but everything in there was Gamecube. It wasn’t a temporary structure so I don’t think it was part of any short-term tour, but it was bad-ass!
I attended the event in NYC, recently. The most remarkable thing seemed to be the relatively even balance of women and men. We were at an “over 21” night, because free beer nicely counterbalances the overabundance of “Xtreme” propaganda. The audience that night was mostly 20s and early 30s, but was at least half women, and the women were actively pushing guys out of the way to play. It was very nice to see both sexes seeming to enjoy the games equally.
I went to the one in san Fran last summer before the launch and it was ok, i thought the Xbox thing was better.
