Nintendo finally reveals the Switch console

My animal need to pay less for games has me buying physical from Amazon for the 20% discount.

It also leaves more room for things only sold digitially.

I like the visual image conjured up of animals carrying around little cartridges.

It depends on the type of game but for me it’s like 90% digital.

Yeah, I was debating getting Splatoon 2 anyway on cartridge since I can get 20% off at Amazon and trade the cart in if the single-player doesn’t grab me. But I already have Mario Kart 8 on cartridge and I don’t want to have more than one piece of physical media for the Switch.

Digital, except Zelda which I got with the console so I wouldn’t have to download before playing. It lives permanently in the cart slot. :)

Physical are quite a bit cheaper unfortunately so depending on the game I might pick up the odd one or two in the future.

Yea that’s basically me. I got Zelda at launch physical and there it remains unless there is a single player game or something that can displace it for like 2 weeks. Then it gets parked in it again.

Apologies if this has been discussed before, but what cases are you guys using for the Switch? I want a hard case that is actually hard instead of the “hard-sided” EVA ones I’m finding online. Basically, I want this for the Switch, but it doesn’t seem to exist.

I’m using this one:

It’s not a hard shell case, but it works really well for me.

I don’t think there’s anything like that yet.

I use the one that was in this…
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Special Edition - Nintendo Switch https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N224U9S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_6FJDzbPVP57N4

There are similar cases that just have a different exterior and it’s hard and snug enough that I am not concerned about it while traveling.

I’m using the Gioteck, which I guess might be EVA? It’s pretty enormous, but given that’ll mainly be using it for travel, I needed something that would store a decent battery pack. Speaking of which, I need to see what the largest Anker USB C pack is that would fit in it.

So… initial thoughts! First impression though is that i’m not going to keep it.

  1. This is clearly, clearly meant for kids. Everything about is kid oriented. The whole reason (imo) it doesn’t have Youtube or a web browser is to keep it a walled garden. I really liked the parental controls app feature as an idea. I love the feeling of the NIntendo UI and friendly ecosystem in general. I would feel very comfortable giving this to children. But…

  2. It needs more kid friendly games! I really got this to play Wonder Boy in Monster World (which is cute in that it changes the name of the game to Wonder Girl if you choose a female character) but in the online store there’s hardly but a few fully kid oriented games and that game is what, 30+ year old? So… ok. Make it full of those heartfelt indie games that are so popular now. No, not many of those yet either. So not indie darling nor super kid friendly. Coming from any other ecosystem i am a bit shocked at the paucity of titles. I mean, i wish i had the rights to TIny Thief from Rovio Stars before they became defunct, it would have been a perfect Switch game.

  3. Screen is … kind of tiny. I mean i play games on an iPad mini and that seems huge by comparison. Having actual controls is nifty, but…

When I used my friend’s Switch I loved the menu sounds, particularly the Controller one.

It’s been available since March 1, man. You’re really going to knock a library that contains Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, The Legend of Zelda; Breath of the Wild, ARMS and Splatoon 2 within four months of launch and say it doesn’t have enough games for kids? Seriously?

LEGO City Undercover… Shovel Knight… 1-2 Switch…Snipperclips…

Honestly, I don’t think Nintendo has ever had this many really awesome games within that short a time. Mario + Rabbids arrives in a month. Pokken Tournament DX arrives a month after that. Super Mario Odyssey a month after that. It’s kind of ridiculous.

It’s the largest handheld console screen ever by quite a distance.

If you’re thinking about it like a tablet, then I can understand why you’d be disappointed. It’s not a tablet. It’s a console you can take with you.

Impressions. Gut reactions. Not carefully reflected upon conclusions! Just being honest. This could very well change later! I need to order Zelda.

As for indie darlings, they don’t get much more indie darling that Shovel Knight. Or for that matter the 2D Boy games.

Um if it was meant for kids then it most certainly would have Netflix, Youtube, and probably a web browser. The number of kids that are intent on watching hours of netflix and Youtube is staggering and making a Kid geared device without these is dumb.

It’s no more about being a walled garden than any other console. The one and only reason they do not have a web browser accessible is because that is the easiest entry point for hacking, and has historically been the biggest entry point for console hacking previous. Nintendo is scared right now because (if I wanted) I can load up a web browser on my Wii U and install any game + DLC I want without buying it.

The point is that you can’t control what the kids watch if they have a browser or Netflix and they’re alone. You can do so on a “TV” console because you see everything they see, but with unfettered Youtube access little Johnny is watching breast massage videos at 10 years old and mom and dad will have no idea. I mean, maybe i’m wrong? but my instinct says this is 90% right w/re to Nintendo’s thinking. They don’t want the liability of making a “toy” that turns kids into Pepe and porn loving pervs. If parents want to give them an iPad, hey, it’s on them.

There is a YouTube Kids app, so if they really wanted to restrict things to that, they could. They could also arrange, through the Parental Control app, to lock Netflix to the Kids profile limitations. I use both of those regularly with my kids, albeit not on a Switch. The Parental Controls on the Switch actually seem to be the gold standard, and I could easily see them expanding. That’s one area where Nintendo is second to none.

Nintendo 3DS has a YouTube app and a web browser, both of which work fine for breast massage videos. Your opinion on this is kinda out there. Nintendo just hasn’t prioritized video playback on the Switch because everyone carries a cell phone that can already do that stuff.
