Yeah looks pretty close bar resolution drop, but the Switch does run at half the frame rate of the others.

Alright, I grabbed a Switch and picked up Zelda. I’m not really into platformers so don’t think Mario would be my cup of tea, but what are some other must-haves?

I’m not really into platformers either … but Mario is so next-level it’s worth considering. :)

  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, esp. if you didn’t have it on Wii-U.
  • Like tactics? Mario & Rabbids Kingdom Battle. Possibly Disgaea 5 if you’ve not played it on PS4.
  • Splatoon 2, ARMS - I’ve not got these but I plan to pick them up.
  • Golf Story - sweet exclusive Golfing JRPG
  • Stardew Valley - Switch is the perfect platform for this game
  • Steamworld Dig 2 - Again, on other platforms but best on the Switch
  • Bunch of other indies like Issac, Shovel Knight.
    and…
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2 in under 4 weeks!

Well, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe…some of the Indie stuff is cool, I really like Golf Story, and Stardew Valley is ideal on the Switch…Mario+Rabbids is a cool turn based tactics Mario themed game, but it may be a love it or hate it thing…and Xenoblade Chronicles December 1st…

Do you guys usually buy physical copies of games, or digital? Tangentially, any recommendations on memory cards?

I’m all digital bar my initial Zelda bundle (so I could play the moment the system arrived). Mainly because it’s quicker than going out and buying a physical version, or waiting for it to arrive in the mail. :)

I’d consider physical for games I don’t want immediiately, since physical is generally cheaper. Some people like it for re-sale potential.

The Samsung EVO+ is often recommended as the go-to Switch SD card. Sweet spot price-to-capacity ratio is 128GB, though you see good deals on a 200GB as well. Or get a 256GB, wihch is slightly worse value.

I don’t mind physical for the aaa titles. I bought a sandisk ultra 128 for 37 dollars recently. I’d keep an eye out for a good deal later this month. If you don’t need it immediately (which you won’t unless you want to download something really big like Doom)

Physical all the way for me – hard to pass up on the Best Buy 20% and leaves room to cram it full of indies without buying a memory card. I’ve also had a carrying case since launch (thanks Zelda) which makes the issue of where to store the carts a… well… non-issue.

Since no one ever mentions it:

If you like Tetris at all, definitely pick up Puyo Puyo Tetris. It’s easily the best home version of the game since Tetris DS, and it even comes stapled to a far superior action puzzle game.

About half and half on cartridge vs digital for me. The Nintendo shop is pretty convenient…my download of Super Mario Odyssey took roughly an hour, I suppose, and that’s a big game. You should be able to find a good deal on a memory card week of Black Friday…I almost wish I had waited.

What’s this now? Awesome! Somehow this escaped me on the eShop.

Yep, it’s been out since April. The retail version is $10 more, but includes some nice keychains if you’re into those.

There’s a demo too.

During an earnings call this week, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed that, “We will have some Switch games next year.”

This is rather impressive.

I want to see it using Splatoon motion controls! Doom totally deserves that kind of speed, fluidity and accuracy.

Edit: it’s impressive but, bleurgh, it looks so sluggish with thumbstick turning and aiming after playing the PC version.

I’ve read that the default sensitivity is waaaaay low and it looks like this player in the video did not alter it. I’d like to try it for myself to see how that shakes out. I’m very tempted to pre-order today from Amazon for the discount because the idea of DOOM on the go is very appealing to me same as Skyrim…

I heard from my brother that his wife has a Nintendo Switch. I’m guessing this means she is keeping it hidden from her four kids until Christmas maybe? I told him to please bring it to our parent’s place at Thanksgiving when the family gets together. Or his SNES if he can’t convince her to bring out the Switch yet.

So I’m hoping I get to try the machine on Thanksgiving!

It’s incredibly impressive to me how well DOOM runs on the Switch. It really proves what I was saying wayyyy earlier in this thread, almost a year ago:

There was a lot of doubt at the time, but now it seems clear that the Switch is actually significantly more capable than the PS3 / 360 were.

The Wii U was slightly more powerful than the 360, and the Switch is doing upgrades to Wii U games. I don’t think DOOM could have happened much at all on 360.

So this bodes well for the future of Switch games IMO.

To be fair, Doom’s engine scales really well on PC, so it’s not that surprising the Switch can cope with it. I basically max out my 144Hz 1440p monitor on a 1080.
