Captain Toad is a lot of fun. Nothing terribly mind bending, but a great time.

As an aside, I finally bought Golf Story in the current sale that ends tomorrow. It’s great! Only played like 20 minutes, but it’s sort of exactly what I expected and yet subverts that a little bit at the same time with the quirky humor. Fun!

I also bought Arcade Archives Donkey Kong. As an arcade game, Donkey Kong stands up really well still today and getting it pixel perfect with leaderboards and in all three versions is just super cool. Notable is that you can play it vertical in portable mode! I have to admit that I want a lot more arcade games on Switch for that reason alone. It’s just so cool to be able to play in the original format so easily even with a monitor I can rotate at home to do it at the PC.

Man, I need more talk about West of Loathing. I am loving the hell out of this game and it cost me like 11 magic beans. DaveLong, get your influencer butt on this! :)

I’ve avoided it because a) the box art looks half-ass, and b) I haven’t played Kingdom of Loathing yet.

But I guess now I should look into it.

I’m sure it’s great but those types of games really aren’t my bag. I can’t be the arbiter of all good things! That’s @tomchick’s job!

I’d buy it on Switch if I hadn’t already picked it up on Steam as a laptop game. Haven’t got very far but I like what I’ve seen.

This is on my list to pick up, as I am a huge KOL fan.

Gah, you need this!

I have never backed a Kickstarter in my life before today…

This was good enough to get me to do that. $15 including shipping for one. It allows you to hold the Switch in vertical orientation with the Joy-Cons attached.

One of my favorite things about this system is the ability to play arcade games in their original orientation. I already own a few that do this and intend to get the Namco Museum among others that will continue to be released in the Arcade Archives collection.

Jeremy Parish is involved. Looks great! November ship date. Fingers crossed.

FYI, captain Toad demo is now out in US and Europe stores (as well as Japan). Downloaded, played, and preordered.

Great video and great idea (with a cute ident). I don’t think it’s something I’d use much but I love that it’s now fully funded and gamers will finally have a way to comfortably play some games as they were meant to be played.

I only found a pre-order option when I searched this morning (UK time).

Yeah! It’s a neat piece of plastic and I really like that it was a no-nonsense kickstarter for a thing that needed to exist. I’m looking forward to it!

The versatility of the Switch is really second to none. When you think about all the options for playing games… vertical screen, touch screen, motion controls, multiplayer with one device, on the go play, on the go network play, on the go Internet play, all alongside a proper home console experience if that’s really what you want most… I mean, it’s kinda crazy how versatile it is.

That they can get me to consider, time and again, to rebuy things I already own on the Wii U just because of many of those things above, shows how powerful that versatility is for consumers.

Mannnnn, if only Pinball Arcade hadn’t had to pull all of the Bally/Williams tables from the Switch version…

Really?

Yes really. I only had a little time before work, so I just gave up and bought Mario Tennis instead. It’s possible it was hidden within the pre-order page somewhere.

Maybe check again when you get home. It should definitely be there.

Crush40 is back! (The band that does the music for Sonic games.)

I was hoping this would be more like Sonic R, but it still looks good.

Please tell me Tennis sucks so I can save my money. (Impressions please.)

Well, I enjoyed the demo a lot, so it’s unlikely I’ll say that. That said, if you’re looking for a relatively traditional tennis game, you may not want it — there are a bunch of superpowers and special moves in the standard mode. One podcast described it as basically a fighting game, and I think that’s pretty apt.

Eurogamer’s review (and another I skimmed, maybe Polygon?) suggested the single player campaign isn’t all that deep or lengthy, and the game can be difficult to the point of frustration. That cooled my enthusiasm a bit.
