Pop over to Switzerland for a visit :P

We’ve been here from June 12th and leave January 9th. Actually, we did just go to Norway for 8 days and Austria for 8 days - but we’re still over the 6 month limit by a little bit. Unless it is 6 continuous months.

You can buy one on ebay.com for around $270 delivered to a US address. Then get someone to repackage into customs friendly packaging and send on to France. Maybe pick one up for @Left_Empty at the same time.

It’s about the time you spent in France when you claim it, so you need to do the claim (by leaving the EU) before 6 months have passed. It’s also 6 months a year, so the 9 days in JAnuary do not count.

I think you might be out of luck… I’m unsure if they will check, though.

This would be a roll of the dice. Customs friendly package means that maybe customs won’t take it, but your package could always be tagged randomly.

True but even at 20% import tax it would still be cheaper than buying in France.

I’ve done tax free stuff a bunch of times. It’s not actually tax free because of all the different fees they slap on, it ends up being like a 60% tax refund. I’ve never seen a situation where they look at cumulative time spent in the country. They only care when you came in and the date you are cashing the tax free stuff. You typically get the refund immediately for big countries like France.

Well I finally beat the easy monster on MHGU! Phew. It felt like my hundredth attempt, but it was probably only about four or five. I decided the longsword wasn’t working for me, switched to sword and shield and boom! Longsword was just too slow for me, monster would have moved on by the time I got that thing swinging. Also, and I’m sure this was a big factor, I finally started to figure out the arts and use them more effectively. They’re a little awkward to hit being below the L stick, you have to stop moving, hit an art, and hope the critter hasn’t moved out of range. Still, having two attack arts was far more effective than only have one (I kept running out of time with the longsword).

The only slight downer is that the bloody cats got in the killng blow! I was busy applying a whetstone to my sword and then oh, is that it? Gee thanks kitties, you could have waited. Also figured out that you have to sheathe your weapons to use most items (which the game tells you only on the dual blade selection screen text, thanks game!).

Definitely starting to see the appeal, although dying and making what appears to be very little progress wasn’t encouraging me to want to buy it. Now that I’ve killed a monster, I think I might be in! Nice job game.

Another deal from the US eShop. Yoku’s Island Express is 40% off. I really enjoyed the demo when it appeared a couple of weeks back…it’s a very cute open world pinball game. It’s hard to describe, but the demo is a very good indicator of whether you’d like it. The full game is supposedly only around 7 hours to complete the main quest, but for $12 it’s quite appealing.

(Edit) Ooh, now that we have a search function that works you can see other comments on Yoku above.

Also, Yoku’s Island Express

When I was in Japan this May I noticed that I could get a Switch for significantly cheaper than I could in Canada. I managed to hold off this time but I think next time I go back I will definitely be picking one up. The $80 game prices here in Canada do give me pause, however.

That’s awesome. The game is really built around that feeling of overcoming a huge challenge. What’s missing from the demo, though, is all of the other things you can do before beating your head against the wall when you encounter a tough enemy.

So for example, the Great Maccao is probably the first large monster you’ll fight in Ultimate, but that won’t be your first mission. You’ll have a few missions of exploring, gathering and fighting small monsters. That will allow you to upgrade one or two pieces of armor, maybe craft a better weapon, and gather up mats for things like the armorskin potion that will boost your armor until you end the quest or faint. There are so many potions. It’s not quite like the Witcher where you’re making the anti-Maccao potion, but it definitely rewards doing your research and preparing for a fight.

Pretty psyched to make the jump from 3DS to Switch and use a real controller. Hurry up and get over with, weekend.

Picked up Hollow Knight and Yoku’s Island Express on sale. Got plenty of Switch fun times ahead of me!

I’ve never owned a mobile gaming device, and I tend not to play games on my phone due to the small screen. How does playing on the Switch’s screen compare? I imagine it would be better to play something like Breath of the Wild on a TV then the small screen, but some types of games would be perfectly fine on the built in screen?

I also worry that if I get one in France that I won’t use it much when I get back home. I play 95% of my games on the PC even though I own a PS 4 (and have had other consoles). Is the Switch something that could buck that trend?

I played Zelda while on my bus to/from work for 10s of hours. Worked great for me.

The best games will adjust their UI to be more readable when in handheld mode.

Anecdotally, while I prefer gaming on my pc, I would say 90% of my gaming is now done on the switch in handheld mode while the wife and I watch something on tv. It comes down to having limited free hours and not wanting to be fully isolated like you are on a PC and not wanting to dominate the TV room like you are with the PS4.

I do something similar, when my wife and daughters are watching some princess film i play the Switch while sitting next to them and try and rescue the princesses myself.

Another Nindies showcase is happening on the 28th. I hope we get a Hyper Light Drifter release date.

I play mostly away from the tv, but have done both. I’d say it’s not wholly dissimilar from playing on a phone in terms of size, so you might prefer playing on tv.

OK, I found a place close to me here that has the Switch for 299 EUR. Hopefully that includes their tax. If I get one, I’m thinking about getting:
Zelda Breath of the Wild
Mario Odyssey
Mario Rabbids Kingdom Battle

My son (11 years old) and I will be the principal players. He tends to like platformers (Rayman Origins and Legends are his favorites), although I’d like to introduce him to other types of games too - specially something that requires some thinking or planning.

Are these good game choices? I’ve heard that Mario Rabbids Kingdom Battle are XCOM like battles, which I like.

I mostly want to stick with Nintendo Switch exclusives as I primarily play on PC, but am away from my PC until January.

Very good choices Rob. You should look at buying these digitally as well as they may be cheaper. Mario Rabbids is half price right now on the US store.

Oh and don’t forget to pick up hollow Knight for $10.
