How would that work for someone who doesnât own a Switch yet? Can I buy it and hang onto a code that will hopefully never expire? Or can I create a Nintendo account without one and apply the code without a Switch?
This. You donât need a console to activate a code - in fact itâs kind of a PITA on the console, vs. logging into your account and pasting it in. Then, when you get a console, sign in with your Nintendo account and youâll have access to your digital games.
Hmmm, after rummaging around on their website for half an hour, I donât think you can, look at this support page:
https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/16906/kw/how%20to%20redeem%20code%20on%20the%20website
If redeeming a download code for Nintendo Switch content, you must first access the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch using your Nintendo Account at least once.
So there it is.
Also, look at me, thinking $40 is a good enough deal to buy a game potentially years in advance in case it never sees that price again. How ridiculous is this?
Oh, Iâm glad you caught this before you pulled the trigger (though thanks to Armando it sounds like the code is something you could just hang onto) - sorry about that, what a dumb thing. I should have known; Nintendo is super strange about digital distribution still. Theyâve come a long ways, but they are no Steam or anything.
Itâs a good deal even so - though if you are years from buying a Switch, it will likely be $40 again at some point, or maybe cheaper. But itâs an ever green title that is unlikely to ever really be âon the cheapâ as well. Itâs an absolutely excellent Mario game, however.
Ok, I got my code for $42.22 with tax. Similar to how I own a PSVR game (Psychonauts) for one day when Iâll get that. Except that was way cheaper.
These are not the Mario games I wanted for 35% off.
On the bright side, the 50th anniversary sales on these games in 15 years should be fantastic!
Thatâs a pretty lame offering.

Luigis Mansion is supposedly pretty good.
And Mario Odyssey is 35% off at Walmart today

Luigi is OK, but gets repetitious and suffers from having a fixed camera angle. I was also disappointed you canât play the main story coop. MP is a set of separate levels.

You can play the main story in Luigi 3 in two player couch co-op. Well, most of it, because you have to unlock Gooigi first.

Ha, I will try that again.
I finally bought Burnout Paradise for $15. This was possibly the most egregious âSwitch Taxâ game. It released at $50. On the other systems it released at $40, and it was down to $20 by the time of the Switch release.
Not sure I beat EA by waiting⌠they still made me sign up for an EA account because itâs been that damn long since I bought an EA game.
Itâs very strange to have a progression system in place when dozens of good vehicles are unlocked from the start.
ManâŚitâs been long enough that I might want to play Burnout Paradise again.

The Switch just got a lot more appealing for anyone who was a fan of A-Train: City Simulator on the 3DS, or happens to enjoy deep railway business games with some city-builder elements mixed in. Didnât appear on the American version of Nintendo Direct because who knows, free exposure is overrated I guess unless Artdink only very recently finalised paperwork for self-publishing the title globally.
Either way, I heartily approve of this game getting a same day global release. Plus with a free trial currently available, that allows you to play the first year of the first scenario\introductory tutorial, there ainât much to lose in seeing whether youâll like it or not.
Hmm. I couldnât get into it on 3DS because of the controls and small screen, and that was with a stylus. I rarely have any joy with management games using a controller.

Mouse definitely my preferred control medium where possible. Though, I canât fault Artdink for how generous they are with the ability to place\lay objects, move them around or undo if required, and then not charge you until you confirm that everything is to your liking. Rare to encounter a costly misclick compared to some other games Iâve played, even with a stylus or controller.
Burnout Paradise isnât exactly holding my hand on starting out. I guess Iâm supposed to hit a lot of ramps and burst through billboards? Hard to even see them as I fly down the highway.
Also have no idea about the different types of boost⌠god I hate going to a guide for an arcade racer.
And then events will eventually unlock? Hopefully?
Big plus so far is it DOES feel like Burnout with a different car than the starter.
I donât recall the very start of the game, so itâs possible thereâs a gated section, but basically every junction is its own event.
