Disgaea is easier to see on handheld than a TV. I don’t know if it’s because I’m still not used to my progressive glasses. The performance didn’t bother me in the demo, but I haven’t played today.

I played docked, didn’t check handheld.

I have an easier time with the controls on the handheld. Trying to move the cursor to select tiles is harder for me using console with the pro.

Not sure I like the Main Character - he just annoys me so far.

Have any of y’all played the earlier Disgaeas? I’ve got 4 and 5 Complete for Switch, unplayed. Seems insane to change Disgaea to 3D and have the result be that it looks like the older games, but worse. Maybe I’ll buy Disgaea 6 Complete when that’s available, if it’s patched and runs better. But for now… no reason to

Disgaea 1 has the best story.

Disgaea 4 is very good. The main character Valz is a favorite of many. The game mechanics are pretty good too

Disgaea 5 has very very easy mechanics and quality of life improvements, and the best UI. It has an absolutely boring main character, some edgy “killah” teenager type.

I like the edgy type more because he didnt yell constantly. : )

TIL people play Disgaea games for the story.

I’m relieved to read that 6 is disappointing because of its graphics, performance, and design. I knew I wasn’t going to play it as soon as I encountered the automation feature in the demo that enables pretty much the entire game to play itself. It seems to turn Disgaea 6 into SRPG Progress Quest, or a mobile game, blech. I can’t understand why I’d ever disable the feature, unless I “just felt like playing the game.” That’s not how games work to me. Nice to know that I won’t be missing out on a worthwhile Disgaea because of my hang-up.

Mario Kart 8 also has a feature that auto-steers and auto-accelerates for you. I’m not sure how this Disgaea 6 feature is any different, or why you would feel the need to use that feature just because it exists.

Is there any incentive to not use that feature in mk8? Score modifier, penalty against progression, or even an icon next to players who use it? And does this feature actually drive the entire race with absolutely no input from the player? I skimmed a review of Disgaea 6 that raved about how the reviewer was able to let the game play itself overnight to level up their characters. I simply can’t relate to that.

I enjoy the story in the games, and by ‘story’ I mean the characters and their dialogue and interactions. The actual plotting and narrative, who cares.

The automation also seemed a positive to me, or at least an interesting distraction and not the end of the world - I read it was like setting up your AI in Final Fantasy 12, on steroids.

I’m not sure how to answer the question about incentive. The incentive is wanting to play the game instead of letting the computer play for you?? There’s no score modifier, because there’s no score. Yes, it will drive the entire race without any input, although you won’t use items or anything like that. And there’s an antenna on the back of your car for auto-steer, but you’re the only one who sees it. But if you auto-drive and get third place, it’s the same as if you manually drove and got third place.

If someone wants to let the game auto-play, then they can just watch the story. And if they do it with the TV off, then I guess they’re not really playing at all. But I don’t know why having the auto-play option means you’re required to use it, or it makes the game worse because the option is there.

I’m done with chapter 2 and the automation opens up to a full visual grid-like programming language akin to Carnage Heart.

I haven’t used it, but it does not look as a minor feature at all, and it has loads of depth. It might even become the main feature of the game (if you can speed things up in auto, it will be very powerful).

Yeah I guess I’m weird in that this makes me more inclined to buy it now. :)

I’m liking it a lot for what that’s worth. It feels fundamentally different to other Disgaeas, in how you level up and where the focus is.

And the quality of life improvements are legion.

So far I’m unsure of what’s been cut out from previous games. It does give you units and mechanics at what feels a slower pace.

@Andy_Bates touched on it slightly, but

Auto steer simply avoids going off course. It doesn’t take an efficient line, it will literally hug outside corners, but it will eventually reach the end. It simply keeps you from falling off.

It also prevents you from reaching the full turbo boost when manually power sliding. You can get to 2 levels, but not the final ones.

Auto accelerate only holds at an average speed, not full speed.

It will get you to the end, and usually not in last place, but that’s it.

It is great, however, if you have a, hypothetically speaking, 2,4&7 year old wanting to play together.

The assist will never win against even moderate human players, but it is good enough for kids to enjoy playing.

What the… D6 isn’t out here in Au for another week yet!?

That’s because you are part of Europe.

I heartily object to that, but only when it slightly inconveniences me like it does now. :)

I didn’t realise it was releasing a week early in the US.

I got mine in Spain on Monday. Check Amazon.

Amazon here is the same, 9 July. Ah well. :P
