Right. The rumor wasn’t a more beefed up Switch (which, as you say, would be counterproductive to sales and piss off your current consumers), it was some kind of DLSS solution that allowed the same games to be upscaled, hence still running fine on the older Switch as well. Pretty plausible rumor. But obviously, it turned out to be false.

Wow. Instead of an OLED screen they could have beefed up the CPU. Not enough to run new games that wouldn’t work on the old, but enough to improve performance at higher resolutions of current games.

I like the slight boost the New 3DS got over the old - games loading quicker, and menu navigation being noticeably faster was a nice improvement. I imagine there was some marginal improvement in game performance, though not sure.

I mean, OLED is nice, but it was the last thing the Switch needed. So I take it the original will be discontinued soon.

Hmmm…I hardly ever play the thing…

I suspect “beefing up the CPU” or anything to do with the SOC was not really possible, in the sense of being able to actually produce it this year in sufficient numbers.

The Ethernet part is nice enough, but I have an Ethernet adaptor already. And 64G storage doesn’t move the needle.

But the OLED… that would be nice as often as I play undocked.

My take on this is that I’m really excited about it. I love my Switch and I play it all the time, and while I do like to sit in front of the TV some times to play, I actually kind prefer to play it hand held at my computer desk while I have Netflix or something streaming, or out in the back yard in the evenings during the warm summer nights. As such, having a bigger screen that’s OLED (and now that I have an OLED TV I know that’s a big deal) is just magnificent to me. The better speakers and kickstand are also very welcome, as is the increased storage space.

And $350 is NOT a lot for something like this, imo. The Switch is one of the best pieces of gaming hardware since the Vita, but it’s supported oh so much better than that poor system ever was, and as such I have a backlog of games I’m looking to pick up on it, let alone stuff not out yet. No brainer for me, day one.

Oh, I also think it’s great. Bigger, better screen and smaller bezels are a huge step up. Bigger, hotter, scarcer, more expensive, battery-draining chips… I’ll happily take a pass on those for now.

So the 64GB thing, that’s basically the internal hard drive, right? That’s what they mean by internal memory.

Yeah, which isn’t super relevant as you can pop a micro SD in there real easy. Then you have half a TB to play with

Laugh at my pain if you must, but I’m pretty bummed about this. Third instance in the last two years where the handheld capabilities get the love (Lite, better battery, OLED) with nothing of consequence for the docked player (like me, who is probably 80/20 docked). A LAN port is nice but anyone who cares already has an adapter.

Maybe they had to pivot due to the manufacturing shortages or maybe they never intended to go past 1080p, but those tasty DLSS rumors made a lot of sense in terms of vision, if not, potentially, in feasibility.

I just wish I knew one way or the other. If this is it for the Switch, I’d probably pony up for one, since I did love the OLED on the Vita. I’d prefer to wait if there was a SNS coming next year, but if it’s never coming, I don’t want to waste my time. Guess I could always sell mine and buy an upgrade when the time comes, but what a pain in the ass…

There’s is no way a Switch 2 is coming any time soon. There will probably be another hardware update.

Is this the thing everyone has?

Now that I look at that, maybe paying the $50 extra for the new Switch is worth it.

I don’t, because I only play for fun.

That can’t be true! You play in handheld mode!!!

I… don’t :O

Oh. Sorry.

I retract my accusation.

I just got Biohazard Revelations because of the propaganda around here though, and I may play that one in handheld because I’m a wuss…
Who wants to play with me?

My favorite part of this video is when the guy gets home, and he’s still in the hallway. Instead of going to his living room and docking his Switch and playing on the TV, he stays in the hallway, and sits down in the hallway itself to play his Switch. That’s how much he’s been anticipating playing it. He can’t even go one additional room.

That was totally me the day I got it, and I didn’t even have a game to play!
Real life is even dumber than marketing sometimes.

I’ve not done that, but I’ve totally sat down in the study and played it handheld. I even play it handheld when I’m sitting in front of my TV. I almost never play it docked. Ring Fit Adventure is probably the only docked game I’ve played in two years.
