One of the things Dicey Dungeons does best is how much variety there is in the classes. Every one is radically different mechanically and then the challenges for each class have big twists of their own. Its packed to the brim with ideas built around the central dice roguelike theme. Great game and it’s perfect for portable gaming on the Switch. Buying for under 3 dollars on sale was easily the best gaming value I got all year.

None of the Switch Harvest Moons/Story of Seasons have been very good. They both kinda rebooted on the platform, and they’ve both had different issues.

The best farming sim overall is probably the 500 pound gorilla of Stardew Valley. The best Harvest Moon on Switch is Rune Factory 4, but that’s half harvest moon, half action RPG. My wife also liked Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles and Grow: Song of the Evertree for no-combat takes. Littlewood is a good smaller take on the genre as well.

Got a new 256Gig micro-sd for my switch to replace the 128Gig one. I don’t mind redownloading a few things, but wanted to confirm that all my saves are on the console before I switch over to the larger card. Even the saves of stuff I have a cart for.

I lost all my screenies when I switched cards (well, I didn’t lose them, but the Switch wouldn’t acknowledge them after I moved them on the new card as was specified on the site), but had zero issues with saves.

Thanks, I think 90% of my screenies are mistakes I made clicking the wrong button. So it’s the saves I’m more worried about.

Save data is always on the console:

I just copied cards with the PC when I upgraded, but of course you do need a card reader. Other thing you can do is sign up for an Online trial, and backup saves to cloud.

New Year’s Sale on the eShop.

What are your instincts telling you guys?

I already have 6 massive games in my Switch backlog that I need to play first. But on the eshop, they have the following games on sale:

Super Mario Maker 2: $42
Eastward $22.50 (down from $25, not much of a sale)
Mario Tennis Aces $42
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze $42
Arms $42

I mean, if they’re on sale this new years, maybe they’ll be on sale this time next year when I’m closer to getting through the other games I have to get to first, right? On the other hand this is Nintendo, so seeing first party games for sale is really weird to me. I feel like I should grab them before they realize their mistake.

I feel like Arms has def been on sale before, and Aces. If I’m being honest, I was very let down by the latter. The motion controls are very bad compared to old Wii Sports, and the regular controls are much too complex for my dumb hands. Despite all the super powers and sfx, it’s actually a kinda legit tennis sim, and there’s LOTS of moves and strikes and counters to keep track of. If you’re into all that, maybe though.

I don’t stick to this very well, but my policy is to not buy a game unless I’m ready to play it right away. Most games constantly go on sale, either for the same price or sometimes less. Something you can do is look at Dekudeals and check out the sale history. You can often tell how likely it is to go on sale again by looking at the historical pattern.

None of those seem like a good deal/game to me. The two Ori games seem like the best deals for the best games. And those are platformy so I assume easier to jump in/out of. Or Dead Cells, SMT 5, or Tony Hawk. For the most part I just use DekuDeku and search by descending metascore to see what seems to be the best price/score (obvs using my judgement) to see if there is something worth grabbing that isn’t always on sale or just tickles my fancy. Which is why I have a crapton of stuff I played a few hours then uninstalled, lol.

Hmmm, thanks. I’ll deprioritize Aces.

This is a nice idea. Looks like Arms goes on sale about once a year (the digital code) for $39.99, so about the price it is now. So I’ll wait. The others are even lower priority.

This is normally what I would do but for multiplatform games I figure there’s no reason for me to ever get the Switch version of a game, right? Since I don’t plan to try handheld mode, whatever the other platform is, it can only be the same or better than the Switch version for docked mode vs the other platform.

So I just wishlist the Nintendo exclusives I might be interested in and keep an eye only on those.

Why is Rebel Galaxy Outlaw never on sale WHHYYYY

Yeah, to second the above, Aces is a straight-up bad tennis game, and I love previous games in the Mario tennis series. Quite possible the worst Mario-branded game I’ve ever played.

This, on the other hand, is maybe the pinnacle of 2D platforming, if that’s your thing.

Which is a shame, because the other 3 Mario games I’ve played in the last year are all freaking amazing near pinnacles of their form. (3D world, Odyssey, Origami King)

That is highly subjective and depends on personal use case.

For me it is the inverse. I will always go Switch if it is a Switch and PC release. Like 100%, because. my personal use case is mostly handheld mode on the couch.

I see that Dragon Quest Builders 2 is on sale at an all time low. That tempts me.

Right, that’s why I specified docked mode and my plan to never try handheld mode. I figured that for people with use cases for handheld mode there were plenty of reasons to prefer the Switch version of a multiplatform game. I just couldn’t think of one for someone who only plays docked mode.

Fair. For me its Steam or Switch. And all things being equal (they often aren’t, prices tend lower on PC) I would buy on Switch over PC if the price is the same, because Nintendo still makes games.

Games I really like too. More than any hypothetical Valve never stopped making games and still made HalfLife and shit type scenario. In that universe I still would go Switch as they have the best in house game development and I’d rather my cut go to a developer who does things I like.

Things from this list I have opinions on:

Super Mario Maker™ 2
Current Price:$41.99 Regular Price:$59.99
Really fun, I recommend it for a fun variety of 2D Mario goodness even if you only barely ever scratch the surface of making your own levels. As a Nintendo first-party game, it’s never on sale digitally for much less than this, usually only on sale once or twice a year. If you don’t care about digital, may be easier to find a physical copy discounted cheaper. I’m going to make this exact disclaimer for several other games.

Clubhouse Games™: 51 Worldwide Classics
Current Price:$27.99 Regular Price:$39.99
Almost never on sale; I’ve had it on my wishlist forever. Appeals to me, but never been an urgent need, so there’s a good chance I’m just going to perpetually think “I should get that some day, but I can wait for the next sale”.

Eastward
Current Price:$22.49 Regular Price:$24.99
On my wishlist, but this isn’t much of a discount. Guessing it will be on sale again before I’d have time to play it, but I do really want this.

Mario Tennis™ Aces
Current Price:$41.99 Regular Price:$59.99
I already own this, and I can chime in with another “meh” reaction. I haven’t played any of the other Mario Tennis games for context, but this just didn’t grab me. See Nintendo 1st part disclaimer. Not much of a sale/not often/physical might be cheaper

Captain Toad™: Treasure Tracker
Current Price:$27.99 Regular Price:$39.99
Also perpetually on my list, this one I honestly do want to play someday. See Nintendo 1st part disclaimer. Not much of a sale/not often/physical might be cheaper

Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition
Current Price:$9.99 Regular Price:$19.99
I almost loved this game, but in the end it wasn’t quite for me. It’s very well liked, so maybe worth checking out if you’re curious, and at $10 it’s probably worth taking a chance on even if you’re not sure. The Switch port is well regarded. It goes on sale a few times a year though, you’ll have another shot.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps
Current Price:$14.99 Regular Price:$29.99
Based on my feelings on Blind Forest, I don’t think I’ll ever play this one, but again, lots of people love these games. Good price.

Untitled Goose Game
Current Price:$9.99 Regular Price:$19.99
Love it. No hesitation recommending this. Not sure how often it’s discounted.

ARMS™
Current Price:$41.99 Regular Price:$59.99
I’ve had this since it came out. It’s fun, but I was more starved for Switch games when I bought this. Probably wouldn’t recommend it now if you play solo, but it might be a hit multiplayer. See Nintendo 1st part disclaimer. Not much of a sale/not often/physical might be cheaper

Dead Cells
Current Price:$12.49 Regular Price:$24.99
I got this when it came out, and enjoyed it a bit, but it had some performance issues compared to other platforms. Not sure if any of those have been addressed later, but it seems like this is probably a better bet on PC.

DOOM® Eternal
Current Price:$23.99 Regular Price:$59.99
Awesome game, good price, and as I understand it the port is super impressive that it works as well as it does, but this is still the worst platform to buy this on. Hard to imagine anyone who would be interested in Doom having the Switch as their only platform that could play it.

Katamari Damacy REROLL
Current Price:$7.49 Regular Price:$29.99
I’m tempted to pick this up just for the once or twice per year that I want to play one or two levels and remember how great the music was.

Grindstone
Current Price:$9.99 Regular Price:$19.99
I loved this game on Apple Arcade on my iPhone, but the gameplay seems more suited for a phone; picking up and playing a level every now and then, not long play sessions.

Spiritfarer
Current Price:$14.99 Regular Price:$29.99
Goes on sale pretty frequently, I’ve just started playing it in the last month and I’m really digging it. I recommend reading the Eurogamer review and seeing if it sounds like your jam. It’s unique, it’s beautiful, and there’s a lot to like about it, but it does feel a little grindy and deliberately slow.

GRIS
Current Price:$4.24 Regular Price:$16.99
A pretty indie game. Very low challenge. I like it, but it’s not a must have. I wouldn’t pay more than about $5 for it, so the price is right, but you could also skip it.

Captain Toad is awesome, but absolutely needs to be played in portable mode: docked mode controls are miserable.
