I’m kind of surprised no one talks about the massive input lag in games on the Switch. Especially in 2 player mode, especially on the Joycons. For some reason the pro controller has much lower input lag, but the joy cons just make me want to cry when I have to do anything on the screen that requires precision, like walking down a narrow ledge as Mario without falling down. I have to sort plan for the huge amount of input lag in my head and it’s sooooooo hard.

I don’t use the joycons much except in Mariocart but have never noticed any lag. Other than my aging reflexes. :)

What are you talking about? I have never experienced this, and I’ve been playing end game Odyssey content which can be pretty exacting.

I’ve noticed no appreciable lag using joycon in either docked or handheld mode, or when compared to other controllers.

Interesting. Maybe my joycons that came with the Switch OLED are bad.

I finished No More Heroes III over the weekend. It’s excellent. Probably not the best entry in the series. More mainstream and less personal than Travis Strikes Again, but absolutely crazy at times and subverts expectations over and over again until it finally climaxes the entire trilogy. Highly recommended if you enjoy Suda’s games even one bit or enjoy philosophical discussion of Takashi Miike’s Japanese films.

Ya, that is very strange. I don’t recall every hearing about any sort of lag with joycons (original or OLED). Could there be some interference from something? Surely both joycons wouldn’t be bad if it was some sort of defect.

I mean certainly seems possible. Its definitely specific to your setup as generally joycons work very well.

If possible I’d try pairing it to a different switch and see if it persists. Or pairing a different set of joycons to yours. Science this up!

I get some input lag on very specific games, or specific moments (like fishing in Three Houses) - but only when wirelessly playing like with my pro. When my joycons are attached to the edge and I’m playing handheld, I’ve never once had an issue.

I suspect what Rock8man is talking about isn’t input lag as simply lame controllers which lack precision. Which the joycons definitely are.

Sure, but @Rock8man also mentioned some lag on the pro controller. And while I do find the joycons in the little holder thing to be too imprecise for me my son has used them as the main controller for all games including Dark Souls until I got him a pro. I’m still thinking it’s something specific to @Rock8man ’s setup/hardware but that’s just a guess.

Make sure there’s a direct line of sight to the console. I once had put my Switch behind the TV and had some noticeable controller lag until I moved it out front.

Ooooh, I think there is something to this. It does seem to get worse when I don’t have line of sight, but I dismissed that as my imagination.

The cord that came with it isn’t really long enough to put it on the shelf, so I keep it in the mess of wires instead, sitting on top of the 360’s power brick which I use as the shelf.

I’m not going to cable shame but power bricks and tangles of wires have measurable interference.

There could be lack of precision in there too, but I’m definitely talking about the phenomenon of pushing the left thumbstick up and Mario walking forward about 1-2 seconds later. I’m not sure exactly what my son is up to on the 2nd controller, but it seems to be worse when he’s busy pushing buttons on the second controller. Perhaps the equivalent of keyboard lock in the old PC days when you’re trying to use the same keyboard to play 2 player games? That was one of my theories.

My Switch is right about at couch-cushion height on some shelves under my TV, and a little to the right. I have clear literal line of sight to it—as in, from my eyes to the Switch—when I’m on the couch, but I noticed when using Joy Cons, I have a tendency to sit with my hands down on either side of my legs (instead of in my lap line they’d be necessarily with a controller).

I had to break that habit because my legs breaking line of sight between the actual Joy Con’s position in my left hand and the Switch was enough to cause intermittent interference. Missed button presses, analog sticks not registering immediately, basically what it sounds like you’re having.

Never had that problem with the pro controller, probably a factor of both the position since it’s in my lap and not down by my side, and perhaps more powerful signal (I don’t know if the hardware actually supports that part of the theory).

Move your Switch and see if it improves!

Speaking of JoyCons, ever since I started using the Pro controller rather than the JoyCons, the battery life of the console itself has skyrocketed. I play it for maybe 30-90 minutes a day and let it sleep until it needs charging. I’ve not charged it in DAYS and the battery is still at roughly 60-70%. The Pro controller looks full still. It’s amazing!

Move your switch away from big magnets, like power supplies. Also try and give it some clearance from the RF farm you have with those cables.

I see that Monster Hunter Stories 2 is finally on sale. I’m going to go back to the demo and see if I should pick it up.

I was eyeing this as well. I’m hesitant, because even the positive reviews mention that after getting out of the demo area, performance nosedives. But the game sounds pretty great as a Monster Hunter and RPG fan.

It’s pretty good. I had performance concerns also, hence I got it on PC instead. :P
