I wonder how that’s handled in an online game like Splatoon?
That’s the game which Tom raved about (the Wii version) on the front page years ago, right? If it’s that one, I remember going to try to find it back in the day, maybe a few months after the review and discovering that my late-to-the-party self was looking for what had rapidly become a collector’s item.
Yeah, the Wii version got crazy expensive for awhile. It’s evened out substantially now, but the Switch ports are the best way to play, I suspect.
IIRC, Chronicles X never got a Switch port, but I’m hopeful it comes around before 3 releases so I can gorge myself on the full series.
Yes. It’s brilliant. Easily one of the best JRPGs of all time. I think you’ll love it.
Well, the Switch version is a lot easier on the eyes so you maybe got lucky!
I agree about Nintendo’s art style, but coincidentally watched my son playing the new Kirby game this week and it is pretty rough for a (mostly, I think?) first party game. The game looks delightful and seems responsive enough to play comfortably, but the animation is super stuttery. Up close, enemies move “wrong” somehow, and enemies in the middle distance are animating at a frame per second. It reminded me of Shin Megami Tensei V’s open world stutter but way worse.
I wouldn’t warn anyone away from the game, but it was surprising to see a Nintendo mascot game that didn’t look convincingly polished on the Switch hardware.

Yeah, one of the newer Mario games had that “low frame” animations for objects that were farther away, I think Mario Odyssey. But at least it was so that the game could hit 60fps, so the sacrifice was worth it. I was surprised to read that Kirby does the same technique a lot more aggressively, and still it’s only to hit 30fps. Maybe I’ll save the Kirby game for the Switch Ex Pro.

I can’t speak for VC4, but I really liked VC1 a lot.
There are some degenerate strategies, so I advise not reading too much strategy guide so as not to ruin the experience for yourself.
Plus the leads from Skies of Arcadia are some possible recruits!

I have played the original (unremastered) VC1 back when it came out and really enjoyed it and meant to get back to it and didn’t. So…

VC4 is great. I posted at length in the dedicated thread, but the new classes work well and fill gameplay holes that the cut classes from previous games never really managed. Generally, it solved a bunch of problems from previous games without introducing too many new ones.

Yeah, VC1 had better level design, but VC4 is better in most other respects.
VC1 had a tighter story too. But gameplay wise VC4 is where it’s at.
Aah, one can dream how awesome an X-COM variant with VC gameplay could be.
I never quite got the “push order” mentality of VC: that felt gamebreaking in the three first games, and it actually was. Does VC4 go away with it, by strictly limiting the number of times you can select one trooper?

I don’t think they made any changes on that front, aside from nerfing scouts a bit. Pretty sure you can still use multiple orders on a unit per turn too.
The whole mission rating system could use a serious rethink, especially since it’s tied to the payment you get. It forces you to either play the game underfunded or to use the cheesiest, most boring strategy imaginable. The former’s obviously the way to go to have fun, but it sucks when the game makes you feel like a loser for not exploiting its systems (Congratulations! Your forces took minimal damage and executed a brutally efficient march on the enemy forces. Your grade is a C).
I dropped $20 on the excellent Banners of Ruin last night - it’s a fun card game along the lines of a Slay the Spire that I have played before as I had picked it up on a Steam sale earlier this year (or late last year?).
I like it a lot and was eager to get into it on the Switch at some point, so I didn’t play a ton on the PC version. I decided to grab this last night on a whim and I played a run this morning and unlocked a few new cards and perks and such.
The problem with the game is it’s not a great port, unfortunately. The game itself is awesome, but the text is kind of hard to read as it scales not at all for the Switch screen. That’s okay, I can still play and read it okay just not quite as comfortably as I’d like. The bigger issue is the baffling controller implementation. I have to use the Left stick to select which of my characters is active, I use the right stick to select between my cards and then A to select a card. But using the R stick doesn’t ONLY select cards, apparently, so I have to fight it to get it down to my hand so I can start using Left and Right to get the card I want and then A to select the card - then for some fucking reason ZR (?) to USE the card. What? Why? A will also use the card if it has a target - but if it doesn’t only ZR uses the card (like a block card doesn’t have a target - it just gives +5 block to the active character). It’s so freaking goofy.
So here is a play example. I use the Left stick to select my Bear character, I tape Right stick left and nothing happens. Right and nothing happens. Down and now the middle card in my hand is highlighted. I left over to the card I want and then hit A to select it. I then use Left stick to target an enemy and then A or ZR to use the card. It’s incredibly unsatisfying because of how clunky it was to get there.
I’ll keep at it and hopefully it will start to feel more natural, but I play a lot of Slay the Spire, Spelunky 2, Monster Train, Dead Cells, and other similar games (and they all have the same basic control scheme) and those all feel and play a lot better than this, so it’s going to hard to keep into it, I fear. We’ll see.
