Is there an option to prevent randoms from joining your session? That would seem like the simplest thing. I want to play co-op with my wife but not have someone like milspec turn up and spoil it :D

Not randoms, either everyone or no one. If you want to play with your friends then it needs to be on, and I think anyone can join. If you want no one in your game, turn Network Play off… ASAP.

About to test that now with a friend.

That sucks.

Yep, I’m sure this is exactly what the No Man’s Sky fan base was looking for! :)

Good on you for pushing the limits, I suppose, @milspec. But good lord, what a weird thing to do to a game with such a chill vibe. Survival of the fittest PvP that’s on by default?

-Tom

So this game is quite something. As a first time player, the trying to figure out how to survive and leave the first planet while constantly running out of mining laser charge (until I found plants and realised they have a lot of carbon), you feel really lost and struggle at first. Guess it matches the game world and story quite well.

It also took me 15’ of flying through asteroids after leaving the first planet before I realised you could do more than boost and could actually jump to your destination. That was time well spent.

The game doesn’t exactly go out of its way to guide the player and explain things.

One question: I am on the second planet and the game wants me to gather copper to get the advanced mining laser. But the only bits of copper I found… require the advanced mining laser. I don’t suppose that there is any guarantee that the planet will have the kind I can mine? So am I likely to have to go planet hoping until I find some?

I’m disappointed that the UI doesn’t seem to allow you to auto build sub components for something I’m building. Or am I missing something? The interface is quite input heavy (and that’s quite slow going on a controller) abs having to go to my inventory to build a metal plate before I can then build a bigger component is slow going and more confusing then it should be (the UI doesn’t show the mats the metal plate will require when you are looking at the bigger component). Probably all stuff I’ll start learning over time…

Dog eat dog non consentual pvp isn’t actually the meat and potatoes of those “battle royale” games that sell copies like crazy?

Madness? I say it is a genius move.

A few pictures of my very first game.

My first planet was a scorching ball of slow death. Fortunately, it wasn’t so hot that I couldn’t go out and forage for a while. And it did have a kind of Mars like beauty:

Flying away from my initial world, I realised it was a ring planet. Here you can see it from planet number 2, a “charming” blighted world with acid rainfalls:

And here is me enjoying a corrosive swim:

I do love the exploration vibe in this game.

Now there’s an upgrade you have to install to send items to the ship, when it was there by default before the patch. That kinda sucks. At least maybe it works both ways now, as you could only send things to your ship before the patch.

It’s the same deal with the wooden hut bases. You used to start with a full set of 50+ regular, metal building items, but now you barely have anything at first AND you have to buy buildings with items that are time-consuming to dig for (and take up inventory space) instead of getting them for cheap for a few credits. So they’re actively adding grinding. Two steps foward, one step back, eh?

On the other hand, someone handed me an entire million-plus credits freighter for chasing a few pirates. Was this the way it used to be?

That fix needs to go live ASAP for all of us who decided NOT to start over. Right now I have over two dozen slots between my ship, exosuit and multi-tool that are filled with Obsolete Technology. If I dismantle it now, I get 3 Technology Modules each slot, which are useful, but nearly as useful in rebuilding the lost tech as Nanites would be. The refund for your Obsolete Tech should definitely be Nanites, as it will allow the returning player to rebuild their gear a lot faster.

So wow…so much change, and almost all of it for the better. No Man’s Sky is finally starting to look like the game everyone expected it to be nearly two years ago.

The changes were so sweeping that I ended up starting a new save slot and playing for a little over an hour just to walk through the tutorials on what elements did what, how to refine elements, how to craft a lot of the new stuff, and how to navigate all the UI changes. I highly recommend that players wishing to continue on with their existing characters spend a little time with a new character to learn all the new systems, it was VERY informative.

Once I felt comfortable with the changes, I swapped back over to my existing character. I simply don’t want to give up 18 million units, a nice ship, a very nice multi-tool, a TON of collected resources and most importantly, all the progress I’d already made on the Atlas Path. They must have been listening to me gripe yesterday, as they FIXED the Atlas Seed progression so that now the steps are in the correct order for the red/green/blue systems and their corresponding drive upgrades. On checking my inventory and blueprints, I was able to craft the next seed immediately as they’d changed the required element to one I’d collected at a red star already, and the next element is green (which I should have in my base storage), followed by blue (which is where I was stuck). Also, upon checking the ship blueprint vendor in the Gek station it had dropped me on to start (any existing characters that were on planets in 1.4 got moved to the nearest space station when the planets all regenerated for 1.5) I discovered BOTH the Economy Scanner and the new equivalent of the Theta Warp Drive! WOOT! I just need to collect a few resources from my base storage and my ship will have full warp capability to all systems.

Speaking of systems…I’m currently not in Euclid, but in a different galaxy altogether in a system with a nice lush planet with no ill effects on players and a ton of good resources. The other planets in the system also have a good mix of useable resources, and the system is Gek controlled with a decent economy and low conflict. It’s pretty much a perfect place to start a new character or get an old one back up to speed. If that sounds good to you, I’m SlainteMhath on Steam, so add me as a Steam friend and I should show up in your NMS Multiplayer friends list. Feel free to join my game anytime I’m on! Fair warning @milspec: if you show up in my game, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.

So I was so busy last night repairing my ship/suit/tool critical systems and learning how all the new elements work together that I totally forgot to take any pictures. I will try to remedy that tonight. The game is absolutely beautiful now. I had to stop and just stare more than a few times. Even the aliens look better, and the little animations, at least for the Gek, are adorable. I had a SalesGek shoot me the double pistol hands after we made a deal, and I laughed out loud. Ships look amazing as well. Even my weird bug-looking Explorer ship got a new paint job and more detailing, so I renamed it Blue Hornet since that’s pretty much what it looks like. I want to move up to a nice Class A Hauler (Firefly!) or something similar, and it looks like they’ve come down in price to where I could afford one, but I also want to get all my ship tech sorted out first.

Right now my to-do list is long:

  • Obtain more Nanites to replace obsoleted ship/suit/tool techs.
  • Figure out how to find an existing habitable base, as I understand from Reddit that’s the only way to get back all your old base stuff…apparently the new build anywhere base computers won’t let you restore your stuff from archive.
  • Obtain and refine more resources so I’m back to being properly stocked for exploration.
  • Finish crafting the Atlas Seeds I have blueprints for, and then warp to the final couple of systems needed to complete that quest.
  • Get my ship tech back online so I can fight pirates again. I was ONE pirate away from reaching the milestone Polo needed me to reach to give me another blueprint. Hoping for the Atlas Pass v2.
  • Obtain my first freighter and figure out how the new ones work and how fleets work.
  • Play with friends!

I’ve seen a few people mention that after turning off the network features they were still able to join games with people on their friends list.

I haven’t tried it myself, but that would seem like a good thing for playing without random wildcards.

After some general bug fixes and tidying up I’m really interested to see what they add in the future. This update is not perfect, but it is a damn fine leap forward and I’m having a great time.

I saw a reddit post where someone ran into an entire ocean planet with no land. A submersible would be a nice addition to the other exocraft.

Lots of changes… The mineral refining system seems weird. ALso kind of glitchy.

Sentinels are way tougher than they used to be. Also, weapons changed quite a lot, so I think I’ll have to change things up to see if the other weapon types are useful now.

I don’t have the Advanced Mining Laser yet; if I remember the progression from last night the only thing it’s asked me to get copper for so far was to refine into Chromium(?) which was necessary to build the Base Computer, and to mine the copper I had to first build the Terrain Manipulator upgrade for my mining laser.

Do you already have the terrain manipulator? If so, the copper you’re looking for (or at least what I found on my planet) looked more like a differently textured part of the ground than a distinct object the way other crystals and minerals look.

The copper I mined with the terrain manipulator just looked like a gold shiny mound on the ground. You may still be in an area where that’s hard to find, I don’t know, but that’s what you’re looking for.

If you don’t have the terrain manipulator yet, I don’t remember the recipe to repair that but it didn’t require copper.

Mineral refining is definitely a big step towards being more Minecrafty. I mean, they basically added the space version of the Minecraft oven, right down to it no longer being an instant process, but taking longer the more materials you want to refine. Thankfully you can pick it up and carry it around so you’re not wasting materials building new ones everywhere. I’m not sure I’m a fan though, it feels like added grind that wasn’t really needed.

Sentinels are also more aggressive than they used to be. I had to find places far from prying Sentinel eyes to do any real resource collection, as they were on you and scanning the moment you started shooting anything. Used to be you had to pretty much destroy a couple of things before you’d attract their attention. Again, an addition that seems to be there only to add time/grind to the formula.

Deposit-based resources now require the Terrain Manipulator to extract, and man, does it eat through power fast. I’m sure there are updates that can be purchased, built and applied to reduce that consumption, but again, it feels like a change meant to make doing even simple tasks like resource extraction take longer than they used to.

That’s actually one thing I don’t love. The mining laser and the terrain manipulator take different elements to refuel and burn through at a much different rate. So realistically you end up using the laser to get fuel for the other one and end up taking extra time to get fuel for both.

It’s also kind of annoying that the portable refiner only runs on carbon and you can’t split a stack and only put in, say, 20 out of the 50 in your inventory. It just makes it awkward.

I commented about the refiner upthread and was told that the Carbon used to fuel it which is not used is returned to your inventory when you pick it up. I can confirm this is indeed the case.

I played with 2 other people for about 4 hours. It works. It is easy to “Join Friends game”. Have a thought about who should “host”, since you will all go to the system where that player is located.

Your progress, including your base, is your own. You items, ship, base, inventory, etc all stay with your save. If you enter / exit your ship to force a save point, then quit the multiplayer game and join your own save, then you will see all of your stuff back on your “home” planet.

We occasionally had some de-sync issues. For example, I could not see someone’s player model but could see their shadow and could see the stuff they were building. To fix it, fly into space then back down to the ground to force the other player model to appear again.

You can trade items and resources with other players, who are close by, using the X item teleporter like you would for your ship, and you get an additional option for “teleport item to player Joe”.

Its full damage between players, so be careful where you point that mining laser. :-)

Overall multiplayer was fun and easy. I am not sure what the point is, though, especially if your bases are separate.

I am testing trying to find each other’s home systems, and see if collaborative base building is possible. I know this site maps out locations:

https://pahefu.github.io/pilgrimstarpath/

And I know we are at:

me / milspec: 045c:007b:0dee:0045
my friend: 02de:0079:0c9c:002d

Get the coordinates from your Signal Booster. Where are you?

Oh, and:

:-) I was really just testing. I sure wouldn’t kill anyone on my Steam list.

I made a terrain manipulator and I’m pretty sure I’ve seen the kind of ground textures you mentioned. I’ll give it a try later.

You’re right, by the way. I was playing until 2am and got what i was trying to build mixed up. Thanks!

Can’t you just recharge your hazard protection with sodium or whatever it is?

My first planet (started a new game last night) slowly tried to kill me with cold, but I could easily keep up with sodium. Second planet tries to kill me a little faster with radiation, but same thing, there’s enough sodium that it’s an annoyance, but not a threat.

Am I just lucky that these places aren’t killing me a lot faster than what other people are seeing?
