Based on my initial time with the game a few months ago and with NEXT last night, it seems they’ve made it a smidge easier to stay alive, thankfully.

I think all regular-level hazards require more attention than they used to, since you don’t start right next to your ship anymore. If you don’t realize you should be looking for sodium plants you might have a problem starting out.

Not IMO I tried to play with the new update and was getting attacked by every sentinel I ran across. Then after taking off the planet I got repeatedly attacked by ships until I died. Not to mention them changing everything in terms of resources which made me stare at my screen wondering what the fuck is all this. Oh I also had two charges on my hyper drive befre the update and now they were gone.

Screw this game. Its still just and endless grind fest like your a hamster stuck on one of those wheels. Now this crap everywhere that wants to kill you.

It’s kind of amazing that we had such different experiences. Nothing outright tried to kill me, and I was in my spaceship within 30 minutes, rather than the hours it took before NEXT.

Not saying I love the game, but it’s definitely headed in the right direction.

Anyone checked to see if you get the discovery credits with the networking features turned off. I remember when I was moving and put steam in offline mode, I could play but wouldn’t get discovery credits. So I’m not sure how they handled the “play solo” instance vs the connect back to game instance for the discovery credits.

Those credits help with the grind.

I didn’t get to play too much last night and decided to start a new save. On normal.

My second planet with the copper mining step and the mandatory shelter building had severe storms. I got the shelter up right about when a storm came in. That was … nice. With base anywhere, and the base item portable, and enough carbon meaning you can pop the equivalent of a port-a-cave fast enough from the time when you see a storm warning flash means survival mode may have just gotten a bit easier. I have tried survival before, may give it another spin. The excess mining for fuel was a bother before though too.

They really need a hot key for 1st to 3rd person view though imho. I find the “quick” menu an oxymoron on the PC when operated by this old person.

Why would anyone ever want to be in third person view for this game? It’s ungainly and poorly implemented. It was designed for first person. I don’t need to see this bumbling spacesuit guy wherever I go…

Oh yeah I know. I just mean that it’s more annoying to keep things organized since it can only use the one element that you might easily want to save a specific amount of it for something else. Like in the field I was going to refine some of the carbon just to have a more potent version… But how do even do it when the portable refiner just sucks it all up as fuel and won’t recognize inventory stacks you split. The answer seems to be that you can’t, and it’s slightly irritating.

Though I do think that a large refiner built in a base does not require power, so there’s that.

That was my reaction at first. But then I switched back to 3rd person because I kinda like the way my guy looks. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’m curious. For those having difficulty with starting planets, NPC aggression, etc – Are you playing on Survival or Normal?

I feel like in Survival, every single planet has either 1) harsh weather, 2) sparse resources, or 3) aggressive sentinels. But I don’t remember any such problems in Normal.

For GOG owners of the game, here’s a heads up. Hello Games is not supporting multiplayer for the GOG version currently. They said they plan to add it at some future point and will be working with the GOG team to add the missing functionality to GOG Galaxy. So, it could be a long wait for those of us with the GOG version.

This caused a ton of consternation for my podcast co-host, who had to double dip on Steam to play with us. So much so we changed the entire topic of our show yesterday so we could talk about it.

Ouch. Sounds like you were playing your pre-update character and the planet/system you were located in has become high conflict with aggressive sentinels post-update. As for the warp cells, I lost all mine as well, not just the charges in the drive, but the couple of spare cells (and all the ingredients to make more) that were in my inventory. Just gone. It looks like existing players were stripped of any resource that doesn’t have an equivalent in NEXT, including any charges in your warp drive since warp cells are created a different way now. Maybe head to the space station in your system and see if you can buy a warp cell or materials to build one, then warp to a different, less aggressive system to recover?

Having played both my existing character and started over with one (on a toxic rain planet) I DO think in general it’s easier to survive now, especially with the story/tutorial stepping you along the path to repairing, recharging and creating the things you need to survive. RNG rules still apply though, and I suppose bad luck could put your starting location on a very inhospitable planet, but that’s why you always have the option to delete the save and begin again on a different world.

True, I forgot about that.

However, I think my issue is that my brain is wired to use “Normal” mouselook for walking around and “Inverted” for flying. Pulling back on the mouse should make your ship go up, as if you’re pulling back on a flight stick. I’ve played with the settings and it doesn’t appear NMS allows separate on-foot/flying settings for mouselook.

When you play with a controller, pulling back on the stick when walking makes your character (camera) look down. When you fly, pulling back on the stick makes your ship fly upward. This feels right to me.

The nice thing about NMS is how quickly it recognizes you’ve switched peripherals. The on-screen hints immediately change when I switch from m/k to the XB1 controller.

I might just switch over to using the controller completely. It will come in handy if I decide to play via Steam Link on the big screen.

Well… this sure is different.

Although crafting and the changes to the elements seems more fiddly, I found it a LOT easier to repair my ship, fuel it, and get off the planet. I’m playing on survival by the way.

Even things like keeping your suit powered and hazard free appears less of a hassle. Again, this is based on my time playing survival with the previous build.

I’m playing on PS4 and wasn’t expecting much of a graphical bump but wow, they’ve really done a fantastic job with the improved visuals and biome generation.

It really does feel like they’re nailing that epic landscape feel now. The look and scale just feels much more satisfying and exciting and all the graphic updates, animations and sounds just tie it all together so nicely.

If you showed me this and told me it was a sequel, and I didn’t know it was a free patch I’d believe it.

You are credited for discoveries with network feature off. Both when you scan flora/fauna at the planet (units) and when you upload your discoveries (nanites).

PRO TIPS:

  • Your first planet will always try to kill you, be it through toxins, heat, or radioactivity. Find sodium sources to charge up your survival gear. Find O2, to, in case your life support gets low (and you’ll need it later).

  • Carbon & Ferrite dust: this shit gets used by everything. Stack up.

  • Dy-hydrogen (the blue rocks) and a metal plate will make spaceshift launch fuel, which was, is, and will be a pain in the ass in NMS.

  • Your second planet will generally be pretty mellow, except for the occasional storm which is there to force you to build your school-bus shelter. I would actually recommend hanging around there and playing Minecraft/Terraria/whatever for a while instead of following the golden path. Even with only a few components, you can build a nifty little base out of wood.

CREATIVE

Yeah, when I’ve had a hard time it has been survival. In normal things progress slowly enough that you can survive in environments that would probably kill you in survival.

Is anyone else having problems with controller inputs on the PC version? (specifically the Xbox One Elite controller, here.)

It doesn’t let me change the configuration in game at all, instead it launches the Steam controller app. A lot of the inputs were configured wrong by default, like the right stick set to emulate a mouse (with insane sensitivity). Some of the other inputs just don’t seem to work at all. I can’t pick up deployed refiners no matter how I change the binds.
