I guess that ‘base computer’ device is what provides persistence (for a small area?).

It’s sort of clever how they got around a clear limitation of the engine.

Yes, base computer, create a base, be sure to upload it.

If you want a preview of the upcoming dynamic tessellation, go into TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS.MXML and set EnableTessellation to true.

It’s buggy, saps performance, and breaks texture draw-in, but man… it’s going to be so nice when it’s fixed and released!

I built my very first NMS base yesterday. It started as a mini shed, but I had left the base computer outside of the shed, which wasn’t great during acid storms.

So I extended it a bit.

It’s right at the mouth of a huge complex of underground caverns. So I call it “Home sweet home at Hellmouth” (the planet is that inviting).

I was amazed to see all kinds of animals run in to take shelter from a storm when one occurred.

I followed them in and they ran deep enough to be sheltered, then milled about while the storm was raging.

Two or more players can join each other and collaborate on bases long-term, if they are willing to re-start.

If you Join Game with another player, and you start from a new save, then you start in their system and your save will be bound to that system.

I did it with a friend. We each have bases 300 meters from each other, and we can see, enter and interact with those bases no matter if he hosts and I join his game, or vice versa.

UPDATE: Now tested with 3 people total. We all have our home systems set to the same system, and all have bases within 300m of each other on the same planet. Uploading changes to any one base in any one save will make those changes appear in any other save.

Its sort of like an MMO. :-) With 4 people.

Technically, you could just jump into their system, and do the same thing with an existing game, right?

Also, I know you can have more than one ship now (I have my normal C class fighter, but with a $45M A class fighter that’s all beat up that I found crashed, that I’m fixing up. It’s essentially up on blocks in my base’s front yard.), but can you have more than one base?

Or when you create a new base computer, does it just abandon whatever you used to have?

Also, this game is still really, really glitchy. It’s kind of annoying.

The base computer or the help notes (can’t remember which) mention you can indeed have multiple bases.

Reddit says you can have one base per player per planet.

@Timex yes existing players can travel and track down other players to build next to. That might take a long time, depending on how far along the quest progression and how far away the players are.

With regard to the new and improved caves. I too found a windfall of Vortex Cubes which I sold for a tidy profit in one. I was led to them by following a yellow icon visible in my scanner view.

But the other thing I have found is toxicity and I think I was finally able to identify (and destroy or avoid) the ‘spores’ which give off the toxic cloud if you disturb them. Am not complaining, think that’s a nice touch.

But word to the wise, explore with caution and watch for toxic clouds!

Wait, WHAT?! If I assist the freighter in fighting off pirates (the easiest starship duels in the game) I can win an entire freighter? I only avoided the first freighter assist I came across because I’m still in my noob ship w/ no upgrades. Later I got jumped in space and successfully fended off 3 waves, maybe 7 pirates, before running low on resources to replenish my shield. For sure I’ll be signing that memo the next time it comes around. Always wanted a freighter.

I spawned on a very hot world yesterday and it tells me I need Sodium for the life support thingy, but I go up to all the yellow plants I see and they don’t yield sodium, so I’m pretty sure I’m about to die (assuming it auto-saved when I quit). Otherwise I guess the autosave happens right as I spawn?

On the plus side at least the sentinels just appeared to observe, and didn’t shoot at me.

I hope some of you guys are up for some coop this weekend with a newb.

You’re using the interact key on the Sodium plants, not trying to use your mining laser? You harvest sodium from them, rather than mine them.

Sorry if that’s a dumb “are you sure your monitor is plugged in, sir?” question, I didn’t know how (un)familiar you were with the game.

Probably that is what is happening. It’s all pretty overwhelming when you spawn and the environment is immediately trying to kill you.

I agree, I don’t like that. I think they at least need to spawn you with a full Hazard bar. Even knowing exactly what you’re doing, I find 25% to be pretty tight sometimes.

Either that or start you out with a stack of sodium with the first tutorial step being how to use them and where to find more.

Yep. That definitely sounds like trying to use the mining laser rather than interacting with the plants.

When you point your cursor at them, you should get an interaction prompt. That’s the X button on the Xbox controller.

I also feel like the cursor is a bit too offset in 3rd person. Not by miles, but just enough that interaction is awkward sometimes with npcs or harvesting stuff.

Edit - Also, here is a handy general list of materials and such for common uses. Might helpful for both new players, or returning ones given that they’ve changed so much.

Ya, you’d need to have the ability to use portals.

In terms of having multiple bases per planet, how does that work for the following things:

  1. How do the teleport portals work from space stations? Can you travel to any base you’ve made?
  2. How does storage work? I can send material instantly to the storage bins in my base from anywhere (which is immensely useful). But what happens if I have more than one base? Can only one base have those storage bins?

Heh, not bad to point it out, confused me at the beginning.

So, I’m exploring some abandoned ruins and happen across something I decide to interact with (avoiding specifics to avoid spoilers). Out pops all these guys, who frenzy and chase me all the way back to my ship. That’s me in my ship, without enough fuel to take off. I do have 29 blaster bullets left and a fully charged mining laser.

Good luck to me.

The h***** e**s monstars aren’t that bad. Sprint, get distance, pop the close ones off your mining laser (you do keep it charged, right?), and wait.

They are a nasty little surprise the first time, though, that’s for sure.
