I know the game is known to cause the fan to go into overdrive on the PS4. I can’t speak for the original Xbox or the S, but I play on the X and you can’t hear a peep from the fan.

You haven’t even made it to the grind yet. ;)

Anyways I am out, uninstalled it again, I am just not having fun at the end of the day. My record for playing around 6 hours per patch still holds!

Although I had it refunded before, I bought again last night based on enthusiasm here and elsewhere. Will check it out this weekend

I’ve not found any real grind in this game and I’ve got an awful lot of hours in it. I’ve ended up playing it like I played Skyrim. Basically, I do some of the quest stuff when I feel like it and then follow my own goals and do sandbox type stuff that interests me the rest of the time.

I tend to set my own goals on what I want to accomplish in these kinds of games. I wanted to buy a freighter so I built a living glass farm to make lots of money. It’s so profitable that I only harvest it occasionally when I need some more credits. The harvesting part might be kind of grindy for sure if you did it repetitively but I haven’t found the need for that.

I spent a lot of time hunting for ship crashes in 1.3 because I find that fun. Same thing for hunting exotic ships and a better multi-tool. I also enjoy hunting for upgrades for my ships and multi-tool but some folks probably don’t, I’m sure.

Like Skyrim this is a very open game with a lot of different stuff to do. If you like sandbox games, you’ll probably like NMS. If you like a more directed progression in games, you will still probably enjoy it if you follow the main quests, do the side quests, and just concentrate only on doing the things you enjoy doing and ignoring the rest to a large degree.

Sad world amused me…

How do I upgrade my multi-tool? I bought an upgrade for it and it is sitting in my suit inventory. I tried to move it to my multi-tool but the only option was to move it to my ship inventory. And I can’t do anything with it in my ship inventory - I get a message that I can’t install it there. Am I missing something or is this a bug.

Btw, I still can’t build and install a suit upgrade that I have all the components for :)

Ok, so if you have an upgrade module, you do this:
Put the cursor over it in your inventory.
Hit square, or whatever it is on the platform you are playing on, that says “install component”.

This will now make the cursor the component itself. Now move to the multitool (hit R1 or L1 to flip to that page), put the cursor over the space where you want to install it (remember, putting components from a given subsystem next to each other will give bonus power), and then hold down the button for installation.

That should install the component for you.

One thing to be wary of, that I noticed last night:
The description of component upgrades in the store is NOT what they actually are… you seem to get something of a random upgrade of that tier when you actually go to install it. So, for instance, a mining upgrade may say that it improve power output, but it ends up only improving reload time (which is totally meaningless and garbage).

“Sadworld” made me laugh. Nicely written article.

Patch 1.51 (PC Only) went live yesterday afternoon. Lots of fixes:

Hello everyone,

First of all thanks so much to everyone who has already spent time playing NEXT and letting us know about any issues you’ve experienced (and a special thanks to those on PC who have opted in to the Experimental branches to help us verify fixes early). It’s overwhelming to watch thousands of players begin or continue their journey across the universe.

We have now released update 1.51 to PC, which includes the fixes detailed below. We’ll be rolling out these fixes to other platforms as soon as possible.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed an issue where players who saved after partially repairing some items of technology would be unable to load that savegame. Please note that if the game has not been resaved, then progress has not been lost and will be recovered.
  • Fixed a crash caused by memory corruption
  • Fixed a crash in the animation system
  • Fixed a crash when saving on a freighter
  • Fixed a crash when fleet expeditions end without their capital ship present
  • Fixed a number of memory leaks
  • Fixed an issue where warping in multiplayer could cause players to spawn on a planet rather than in space
  • Fixed an issue where freighter bases would be in the wrong position
  • Fixed an issue where the build menu could crash if there was nothing available to build
  • Fixed an issue where players would be unable to warp during the antimatter stage of the tutorial
  • Fixed an issue where the mission destination would be incorrectly reported as in another system at the Hermetic Seal phase of the tutorial
  • Fixed an issue where upgrade modules installed in the main Exosuit inventory would not be saved correctly.
  • Fixed an issue where portable refiners placed near each other would share inventories
  • Fixed an issue where the cockpit of some ships would continually open and close
  • Fixed an issue where new controls were missing from the controls page
  • Fixed a crash in creature routines
  • Fixed a crash when multiple players put ammunition into a refiner
  • Fix for occasional crash when receiving mission rewards
  • Fix for crash when adjusting anisotropic filtering settings in the graphics options menu
  • Fix for potential crash in geometry streaming
  • Improvements to texture caching for AMD GPUs
  • Fixed an issue where some players still had physical nanites in their inventory that could not be spent at vendors
  • Granted players nanites when they dismantle their Obsolete Technology – spend nanites on new upgrades in Space Stations
  • Added a tutorial mission to guide players through the restoration of their old base
  • Fixed an issue where players were unable to build Frigate Terminals in Creative Mode
  • Fixed an issue where S-Class ships changed appearance
  • Fixed an issue where players were unable to build the Base Cache on their freighter to retrieve compensation for the loss of their freighter base
  • Fixed an issue where some Exosuit technology was not converted to Obsolete Technology. Please note this does not apply retroactively to save games that have already been upgraded.
  • Improved the mapping of old substances to new substances during the save upgrade. Please note this does not apply retroactively to save games that have already been upgraded.

Highlights for me include all those Obsolete Technology items in my exiting slots now grant 50 Nanites and a Tech Module instead of 3 Tech Modules. Modules are nice, but Nanites are what I desperately need a ton of to rebuild all my equipment. Also, it looks like they’ve tried to fix the base building for existing players by adding a quest (and presumably they fixed the Blueprint Analyzer along with it). However, I tried making that quest active last night and despite hitting scan and getting the message “Suitable Base Site Discovered” or something similar, no marker ever appeared and I have no idea what I am supposed to do next, as the quest test still says “Scan for a base location”.

Hopefully this fixes some of the issues with missing crap like the blueprint scanner.

See the edit to my post above. Either I’m doing it wrong, or the new quest is also bugged. =)

Their QA is bad.

It’s more likely that most of these things were caught by their QA and deemed not critical enough to be fixed before the 1.50 patch was released.

I don’t know if their general QA process sucks, but whatever they’re doing to test a new player’s experience blows. I think PC Gamer had it right. They’re doing that thing that a lot of other early access survival crafters do. They’ve added more stuff to satisfy current players, but in doing so, they’ve cocked-up the game for newbies.

I dunno, I’m a new player (pretty much, I shelved it almost instantly when I tried it at release and don’t remember anything about the game) and had a fine time going through the new player experience. My only complaint was that the starting planets can be a little harsh and leave you dead while you’re trying to figure out the UI. Other than that, I’m enjoying it as a new player.

Yeah, that’s an obvious example. They start you on a harsh world, away from your ship, to give you motivation to explore, gather, and craft. But that means a new player is trying to read quest/tutorial stuff while learning the interface and juggling the inventory all while the planet is trying to kill you. It’s a dumb way to start.

Well, 17 hours in and the game now crashes every time I try to load the save. Cool cool.

(Xbox version)

1.52 patch is coming out today on PC (or has already come out) and a “consolidated” patch should come to the consoles soon. Which version do you have?

EDIT: yeah, XBOX will receive a patch soon, but no date set yet. Lots of crash fixes in the patch notes.

That could be the known bug where your save crashes if you saved with partially repaired tech somewhere. In other words, if you found a drop pod and only repaired two of the three slots on the exosuit upgrade, then saved, it would crash your save file.

Good news is the 1.51 patch fixes it. Bad news is it’s not out on Xbox yet. Hopefully later today maybe?

1.52 just dropped this morning for PC players.

I haven’t heard my fan playing and I sit 4 feet away.
