It’s hard to get impressions of this as someone who never played it and doesn’t care about the “old” game, only what it is if you buy it today.
So… how is this? Is it closer to the dream game everyone was talking about? Are the procedural worlds still boring? Is there still no point?
Or did they get closer to the “something fun around every corner” gameplay?
Inquiring minds want to know.
If that’s how you felt about 1.0, I don’t think any of the updates would really change your mind, no.
The whole crafty/survival genre doesn’t really have a ‘point’ per se, as in an end state, or final boss, or satisfyingly wrapped-up story arc, or whatever… some can embrace that type of game, some can’t.
HG will never get anywhere near this dream game that everyone was talking about, as everyone has different dreams. Nor are they trying to! :)
Cf. @lordkosc for someone who played every patch and never really got into it:
But then also see Mack at WorthaBuy for someone who totally lambasted the launch game and came around to NEXT:
Myself are 2 close friends went in cold. It’s been a blast. Lots of things to do. I suspect it’s in the eye of the beholder somewhat, but the procedural generation, ability to fly from surface through clouds to space, different upgrade paths for suits and tools and ships, and quality of the major questlines are all worth the price of admission. We have a collective 100 hours played in less than a week.
Those are landing pads. You can recall your ship with it, but yeah, you can do that from the quick menu anyway. I think it might be useful to recall your ship if it has no launch fuel (quick menu doesn’t work in that case), but I haven’t tested it out.

Yeah, but they were in another Galaxy.
Normally, when you move to a new Galaxy, you are disconnected from bases in the previous one, because those worlds are different, since the procedural seed for the Galaxy is different.
Apparently, the devs did not consider that you might join a game which is in a different Galaxy than your own saved game.

If you buy a new ship, do you lose are the cargo? I assume you lose upgrades.
Specifically on this, the procedural gen has improved a lot since the early days. More variety, much more differentiated scale in the landforms, deep oceans, proper continents; improvements all around.
But still, even back in 1.0 some could let their imagination go and find wonder in entering a new system, flying seamlessly down to a planet surface, getting out, and wandering around surveying what was there.
And some would just see ‘environment type X, palette swap Y, prop set Z’.
I think that would still hold true today too. :)
You can transfer your cargo when you buy the ship (just before you buy from memory, I haven’t bought one in NEXT).
Wow, really? So the second planet you were led to wasn’t fairly nice? Because it was for me – I assumed that the algorithm was set up that way.

The first planet was toxic, the 2nd one where I had to build my base had fire storms, so no. Do the nice ones spawn around yellow stars? So far, I have just only been able to go to yellow stars.
Speaking of which, what does the star color matter other than the hyper drive type?
BTW, many thanks to @SlainteMhath for dropping in on my game today and answering questions on how to properly install exosuit upgrades (I managed to install one for life support correctly, in the tech inventory of the backpack)! Also for telling me that the arrows and double arrows on the portable refinery are for setting the desired number of the end product.
My starter was toxic, second was freezing, but there was a nice planet in the system at least. I set my initial base up there.
The quest actually says to find a planet to build your base on, not that you must build it on the second planet.
My second planet did have storms where the temp would rise dramatically, but curiously that didn’t happen till I was equipped to build my first shelter (a hell of a coincidence if it was that). Otherwise it was a decent planet though. “Bountiful,” moderate climate, lots of flora and fauna, etc.

That second planet storm is client side - it happens at that point of the story. The first storm also, which drives you to get the component you need for your ship, is also client side. They stop once you pass that point.
All other storms are “real”, based on the planets weather.
Source: I have guided 3 other people through the tutorial and get to laugh in peace while they run from an unseen storm.
Hmm, thing is, I’ve had more than one storm on that planet. So if the ones after the first one were real then I guess I was just lucky till then.

If you buy a starship for a cost of 1,000,000 credits, later on when you upgrade to a new ship, is the old one still worth 1,000,000 credits?
I have also seen posts about fixing up crashed starships and then selling them. I have never seen one of those beyond the first one in the beginning.
I found my first salvage ship by accident, but you can also use navigational data to scan for distress signals and then some of those will be crashed ships.
The best thing about the crashed ships is you can add them to your fleet for 0 credits. But they usually need a lot of work. I found an A class Explorer, which is amazing compared to the flying tin can I started the game with, but it’d barely fly, couldn’t shoot and most of the cargo spaces were broken. I needed a lot of materials to fix it up, but it’s glorious now I’ve finally got most of it done.
No, resale is always less than purchase price.
